Career Development Center

About 50% of students will participate in a relevant work experience as part of their academic requirements. Many other students will work through their career center liaison to identify and pursue relevant work experience to build their skill set. For those needing relevant work experience, you must complete the following steps:

Orientation Steps

1. Gain approval for your internship from your Faculty Coordinator

2. Attend an Internship Orientation with the Career Development Center

3. Register for the Internship Class

4. Review hour Requirements

1 hour of academic credit = 130 total hours worked (10 hours a week for 13 weeks)

2 hours of academic credit = 156 total hours worked (12 hours a week for 13 weeks)

3 hours of academic credit = 195 total hours worked (15 hours a week for 13 weeks)

When should I pursue an internship?

You major influences the timing and type of relevant work experiences and when you should pursue those. Generally speaking you will want to begin some type of work experience as soon as possible. This could include an on-campus job or a part-time role of 5-15 hours a week. Many students will want to seek relevant career-related work experiences and internships in the second half of their sophomore semester. Some students will seek these earlier and other students will begin their junior year. Our research indicates that students have the best chance for success when they have had three different internship experiences. Most science majors will pursue part-time relevant work experiences in lieu of internships. The Career Development Center is well-versed in the types of jobs that would be relevant based on a student’s career aspirations.

What are the most common organizations that hire Lipscomb students?

The career outcome results indicate that Lipscomb students are hired by companies in a variety of industries and sizes. Many students want to stay in Nashville, so they are often employed by companies within health care, financial services, entertainment and start-up ventures.

How can I connect to an on-campus job?

An on-campus job is a great avenue for students to gain valuable work experience and obtain a small income. Jobs are posted at lipscomb.edu/hr and can be searched by filtering the student category. Some students have been approved for Federal Work Study funds. Those students must apply and be hired for an on-campus job and will receive those funds through a paycheck.

When should I meet with the Career Center?

Students have varying degrees of career needs, but most students would benefit from meeting their career services liaison early on in their college experience. You can explore careers in your targeted field of interest or learn about new career areas. You should meet with the Career Center by the end of your sophomore year to discuss internship requirements and/or relevant work experience options. Upcoming graduates will want to connect with the career center that serves their academic area to plan for the job search and receive information about relevant career fairs.

Personal and Career Exploration

UN 1301, 1 hour, Wednesday at 2 p.m.
This course is designed for freshman and sophomore students that are deciding on a major. 

You will benefit from this course if you:

1. Are unsure of your academic major and want to change
2. Want to explore all career options
3. Are in a broad liberal arts major and want to narrow your career focus

In this class, you will assess personality, values and interests, research career options and create a career plan for your time at Lipscomb. This course is taught by Allison West, assistant director of career development, who is a tenured staff of the Career Center and has a background in counseling.

Professional Advantages

UN 3311, 1 hour, online
This course is designed to equip liberal arts and science majors with the necessary skills to be successful in their job search and transition to professional life. The 16-week course is conducted online and will focus on self-assessment, professional communication, effective networking and mentorship, job search strategies and the transition to professional life. 

This will be one of the most practical classes you’ll take in college. If you are unsure of what life after college will look like or if you’re not planning to enroll in graduate school, this class is for you. 

It is taught by Monica Wentworth, director and assistant dean of career development, who has 10 years of experience helping graduates launch into their professional field. 

Life after graduation can still involve exploring your career options and making connections in your chosen field. The Career Development Center offers alumni the same resources as current students. Feel free to schedule an appointment with Monica or Allison to help further your career.
