Center for Speaking and Writing
The Lipscomb University Center for Speaking and Writing (CSW) is here to provide undergraduate and graduate students with ongoing writing and oral communication support. Our goal is to help students become more confident, effective writers and public speakers.
Enhancing students’ rhetorical agility, the CSW focuses on developing graduates who are career-ready, fostering the mission of Lipscomb’s Learning Commons to empower every learner to reach their full potential
The CSW supports:
- Writers and speakers at all levels
- Work at any stage of the writing or presentation process, from development to completion
- Academic, professional, personal, and creative projects
- Written, visual, oral, digital, and mixed media text
Our goal is to help students, whatever their level of writing or subject matter, perfect what they already do well in a welcoming, comfortable, and creative atmosphere, with a dedicated staff that will review written work interactively, objectively, and with patience and understanding.
Making an appointment:
- Go to http://lipscomb.mywconline.com.
- If you have not already visited the site, you will be asked to register.
- After registering, click on the available white box for the day and time that you would like to schedule an appointment. Each box represents one 25-minute session; if you’d like a 50-minute session, make sure to adjust the time in your appointment form so that you reserve two consecutive blocks.
- Answer the questions about your appointment and intentions for the session.
- Show up a little early for your appointment to check in, and ask the ASC desk worker to point you in the right direction!
Our Policies:
- Clients may have only one 25 or 50-minute appointment per day.
- Clients may have only one appointment on the appointment book at any given time (unless they have spoken with the Center for Speaking and Writing Director, Dr. Sami Grayson, about setting up long-term sessions).
- Clients who are 10 minutes late for an appointment will be considered a no-show, and the appointment will be canceled. Those clients will not be able to reschedule for later in the day.
- Clients who exhibit disruptive behavior may be asked to leave the LUWS (this includes the use of cell phones).
- Sessions may be discussed with other staff members, directors, and your instructor.
- Consultants will not edit or proofread your writing assignments.
- LUWS attendance does not guarantee a passing grade for a paper and/or course.
- Clients who miss three scheduled appointments without canceling will not be allowed to schedule appointments in the Center for Speaking and Writing for the remainder of the semester. The client should email the Director, samira.grayson [at] lipscomb.edu (Dr. Sami Grayson), to be reinstated in future semesters.
- The Center for Speaking and Writing caters to students, faculty, and staff of Lipscomb University. If you are a high school student looking to receive help, you must be 18 years or older to visit the Studio. If you have any questions or concerns regarding this policy, please email samira.grayson [at] lipscomb.edu (Dr. Sami Grayson).
By making an appointment in the Center for Speaking and Writing, you are agreeing to the following:
- I understand that the Center for Speaking and Writing consultants will not write, proofread, edit, or correct my paper, but will provide comments and assistance on areas that could be more effective.
- I understand that the Center for Speaking and Writing is staffed by humans who make mistakes and that I may choose to accept or to reject their advice.
- I understand that I am ultimately responsible for the quality and content of my own paper and that the consultant can neither guarantee nor predict a grade for my paper.
- If a client, consultant, or visitor in the Beaman 219 location of the Center for Speaking and Writing requests that others in the space wear a mask, all should comply with that request. Refusal to wear a mask in Beaman 219 when sincerely requested will result in your appointment being canceled. If you cannot or choose not to wear a mask, we have annex space where you may have your appointment.
Prepare for your session
Make sure to bring a hard copy of your writing or your computer to the session. You will need the assignment sheet or prompt, as well as a writing utensil to make notes.
When you arrive at the center
Please sign in at the front of the ASC if a sign-in sheet or a computer is provided. If you have an appointment, our consultants can work with you at the time that your appointment is scheduled. Walk-ins are welcome but will have to make an appointment for our consultants’ next availability.
If you arrive early, please remain outside Beaman 219 until your appointment is scheduled to begin. Our consultants must complete reports between clients and are not available to begin sessions early.
The WCOnline system hosts all of our online appointments; we do not offer Zoom consultations. When making your appointment, there is an option on the form to choose an online appointment; make sure to do this if you’d prefer to meet online. Feel free to attach your draft and/or assignment sheet there, as well. If you’d like to do that later, you may reenter the appointment form to attach materials. Simply click “edit appointment.”
To access your appointment, log in a few minutes early to WCOnline, find the upcoming appointment, and select “start or join online consultation.” Your consultant will meet you there!
Note: Online appointments happen in real time (as well as Central Standard Time) and utilize webcams and microphones. You may choose to disable the camera, but you must use the microphone unless you have provided the director with accommodation needs; the act of speaking is an important part of our process. The Center for Speaking and Writing does not do asynchronous (or “drop off”) appointments.
