Veteran Services hosts Center for Deployment Psychology symposium on serving vets

Lipscomb University’s Office of Veteran Services is hosting a symposium for university counselors and staff personnel featuring experts from the Center for Deployment Psychology (CPD) on Tuesday, July 31. The symposium will include clinical as well as non-clinical approaches to working with veterans and developing a better understanding of this unique population on college and university campuses.
“Our goal is to provide information for those who work with veterans at universities across the country to equip them with knowledge and expertise to make their campuses more accessible for veterans,” said Jim Humphrey, Lipscomb University assistant dean of students and director of Lipscomb’s veteran services program. “By partnering with the Center for Deployment Psychology we want to educate university counseling teams so they can offer programs that adequately serve our veterans as they reintegrate and adjust to university life,”
The symposium — “Service Members and Veterans on Campus: University Counseling Center Core Competency Program (UC4)” — will address cultural and clinical concerns of service members and veterans on a university campus. The program presents a comprehensive overview of the experience of military-connected individuals including day-to-day challenges, risk factors and treatment of behavioral health concerns on campus.
Symposium topics will include:
- Culture and Experience of Service Members and Veterans on Campus,
- The Deployment Cycle and its Impact on Students,
- Reintegration on Campuses and Introduction to Outreach Efforts,
- Clinical Conceptualizations and Workshop, and
- Overview of Treatment for PTSD on Campus.
During the program, each institution’s participants will have the opportunity to create their own campus plan. Continuing education credits are available..
Admission to the symposium is open to practicing clinicians, trainees and nurse practitioners. Non-clinical university personnel, such as faculty, staff, administrators and campus life officials, are encouraged to attend as well. About Lipscomb University’s Yellow Ribbon Enhancement Program
For veterans who qualify for 100 percent of benefits from the Post-9/11 GI Bill, Lipscomb University has committed to allocate funds to allow them to earn a tuition-free undergraduate degree through the Yellow Ribbon Enhancement Program. The university also offers qualifying student veterans a variety of graduate degrees tuition-free or at a greatly reduced tuition rate.
Lipscomb University officials believe strongly in helping open doors for student-veterans through the Yellow Ribbon Program and has established a dedicated office to oversee this and all needs of its military veteran students. Since its inception in fall 2009, Lipscomb’s Yellow Ribbon Program has grown from 20 original participants to more than 150 veterans enrolled in spring 2012. Students have performed well academically with 71 percent of currently enrolled student veterans maintaining a minimum 3.0 GPA, with 13 percent of those maintaining a perfect 4.0 GPA.
