Update - Day classes canceled; water main breaks near High Rise

Lipscomb PR |

Final Update 9:25 a.m.

About 1:45 a.m. Thursday morning, an 8-inch water pipe burst outside High Rise residence hall on the Lipscomb University campus. All utilities to the building were shut off and residents were evacuated to another area as a precaution. The students were never in danger.

The university crisis management team was assembled and on campus soon after the incident was reported and worked for about five hours to regain normal operations, which occurred about 7:30 a.m.

Classes are dismissed today until 5 p.m. In hindsight, class dismissal was not necessary, but at the time the decision had to be made, it was appropriate based on the information available at that point.

It was discovered that the waterline break was in the fire sprinkler line. Consequently, as that system is brought back on line later today, fire alarms will be triggered across campus. For continued safety, the Lipscomb community is asked to observe normal fire evacuation procedures when the alarms are triggered unless otherwise notified.

At this point, we anticipate no need for further updates.
