Household waste and products usually not recycled accepted at community collection

To celebrate America Recycles Day on Nov. 15, Lipscomb Academy Elementary School and Lipscomb University are hosting two household and e-waste collections on Friday, Nov. 14, and Saturday, Nov. 15. Community members are encouraged to bring batteries, fluorescent light bulbs, cell phones, computers and entertainment devices, ink cartridges, empty personal-care containers such as shampoo bottles, cardboard, aluminum cans, clear plastic drink bottles and expired or unused medications for proper disposal.

Springback Mattress Recycling will also be on hand to collect mattresses and box springs. Springback charges a $10 disposal for each mattress and/or box springs.

Friday, Nov. 14
9 a.m.-2 p.m.
Lipscomb Academy Elementary School campus at 4517 Granny White Pike.

Saturday, Nov. 15 (America Recycles Day)
9 a.m.-2 p.m.
Lipscomb Academy football field at Lealand and Caldwell lanes.

Lipscomb Academy third-graders and eighth-graders will greet those who donate on Nov. 14 and offer them a home winterizing kit filled with energy-saving tips and devices. Proceeds from donated cell phones, newspapers, aluminum cans and plastic bottles will benefit Post-9/11 veterans programs and Made In The Streets, a job skills ministry based in Kenya, Africa.

As member of the Terracycle BrigadeĀ® program, the Lipscomb Academy third-graders are making a special push to collect items that are not normally accepted by traditional recycling programs. Potato chip bags, candy wrappers, drink pouches, empty personal care product bottles, empty glue sticks, ink pens and dried up coloring markers are all items that will be accepted.

Terracycle sends Lipscomb Academy a reimbursement for each of these items they collect, and the third-graders will use the money to benefit a project to help bring clean water to underdeveloped countries and Live Beyond, a program established by Dr. David and Laurie Vanderpool.
