Lipscomb University’s Nursing Honor Society recently inducted 23 nursing students into the society at a special ceremony held in the Doris Swang Chapel on Sept. 15.

The society looks at the top 35 percent of nursing students’ GPAs to determine who qualifies as an inductee. This year, the top 35 percent each had a 3.69 GPA or higher.

“Lipscomb’s Nursing Honor Society is a way of distinguishing academic success and performance among the nursing students at Lipscomb,” said Katie Watson, instructor of nursing and nursing honor society counselor. “Being a member of the society is not only an honor, but also a great resume builder for students and is looked upon as a very positive thing for future employers. It is also a great way to connect with other nurses once they graduate.”

Inductees include:

  • Annika Backlund, a senior nursing major from Murietta, California;
  • Barbara Ball, a senior nursing major from Nashville, Tennessee;
  • Holly Barwick, a senior nursing major from Memphis, Tennessee;

During the induction ceremony, the 2016-17 Nursing Honor Society inductees received a pin, a “Notes on Nursing” book by Florence Nightingale, a certificate and honor chords that they can wear at graduation.

Nhan Dinh, a recent nursing graduate and Lipscomb’s current Nursing Honor Society president, also inducted Elaine Griffin, interim executive associate dean of the School of Nursing, into the society as a nurse leader.

Griffin, who was also the guest speaker for the evening, shared what a true honor it is to be a part of Lipscomb’s Nursing Honor Society. She charged Lipscomb nursing students that, in whatever they do on a daily basis, and especially in their nursing profession, to always serve God and glorify God.

“Being a part of the honor society is a great recognition for our hard work, as well as the hard work of all nursing students who have been inducted, and our school as a whole,” said Dinh. “Being a member motivates us to remember to keep learning and to never stop improving ourselves as better nurses and colleagues.”

Since fall 2015, Lipscomb has been working to become an official chapter of the Sigma Theta Tau National Honor Society by fall 2017.

As a working chapter of STTI, Lipscomb student-leaders within the society make quarterly check-in calls to stay on track with the application and development of the honor society.
