Top-ranking pharmacist in nation to visit College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences

As discussions of rising health care costs and reform are heating up, the nation’s top-ranking pharmacist and assistant surgeon general will visit Lipscomb University’s College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences April 25.
Rear Admiral Scott F. Giberson, assistant surgeon general, director of the Commissioned Corps Personnel and Readiness and chief professional officer, pharmacy, will address how to transform health care in 2013 before an audience comprised of pharmacists, government leaders and members of the Nashville Health Care Council among others.
The discussion begins at 2 p.m. in the Paul Rogers Board Room located in Lipscomb University’s Ezell Center and is free and open to the public, but reservations are requested. Click here to register. The event is part of the Conversations of Significance Executive Leadership Series hosted by Lipscomb’s College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences.
In 2001, Giberson responded to the anthrax attacks in New York City and was later chosen by his peers as the national coordinator for more than 40 response teams under the newly formed Department of Homeland Security. Giberson has served in roles as a clinical pharmacist, chief pharmacist, senior public health advisor, senior medical program officer, principal consultant and division director.
“The purpose of bringing leaders such as Scott Giberson to our college is to expose our students and our community to the larger health care issues and initiatives that are impacting the industry,” said Roger L. Davis, dean of the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. “Our students will have the opportunity to get an inside look at the issues and challenges that the leaders of this nation deal with on a daily basis and to learn how it will impact them as practicing pharmacists and health care providers in the future.”
Davis said the conversation gives the Nashville community an opportunity to learn from experts as well as to learn more about Lipscomb’s pharmacy and health care programs.
In his role, Giberson leads the United States Public Health Service (USPHS) pharmacy professional affairs, advising the Office of the Surgeon General and the Department of Health and Human Services on the recruitment, assignment, deployment, retention and career development of USPHS pharmacists. He also leads all operations personnel and response of more than 6,700 officers of all health professionals within the commissioned corps of USPHS. Through this work, he directly impacts the nation’s health through clinical and public health issues on a national level and improves patient care across the country.
He maintains dual licensure as a pharmacist and clinician and has worked as a member of a family practice medical staff for over 15 years. He is the primary author of the 2011 Pharmacy Report to the U.S. Surgeon General that garnered the U.S. surgeon general’s support and facilitated a nationwide effort to recognize pharmacists as providers. Giberson has authored many articles in national publications, spoken at many venues domestically and internationally and served as adjunct faculty at multiple universities.
Giberson holds a bachelor’s degree in pharmacy from Temple University, a master’s degree in public health from the University of Massachusetts, a graduate certificate in health emergencies in large populations and an honorary Doctor of Science Degree from LECOM School of Osteopathic Medicine.
