Tokens kicks off 2009 season with Vince Gill, Will Campbell

Part theology lecture, part cultural analysis, part old-time radio show, part good conversation, part good music, Tokens is all fun. Tokens, a radio-style variety show, will host begin the 2009 season on March 3 at 7:00 p.m. in Collins Alumni Auditorium with “Justice Songs” featuring special guests Vince Gill, Buddy Greene, Odessa Settles and Sonya Isaacs. The program will also feature interviews with Will Campbell, author of Brother to a Dragonfly, and Brad MacLean on his work on death-row.

Associate Professor of Theology Lee Camp came up with the idea for Tokens after pondering the overlap of music and theology. The 2008 season delighted audiences and had musicians and authors entertaining a full house with each performance. After attending performances last season, Wendy V of Wendy V’s Nashville Blend wrote, “The music was spectacular. Tokens has got it going on like a program that has been around for a while. Lee Camp continues to bring a great mix of brilliant thinker and multi-talented entertainer to his hosting duties and vision for Tokens.”

In a Tennessean article, Ray Waddle wrote, “Tokens ranges from Americana tunes, to short monologues on biblical spirituality, to prerecorded interviews, to down-home skits featuring a wacky advice column called Dear Preacher Man.

“Whatever the turn, Camp's instincts are theological. Tokens refers to glimpses of God's activity in the contemporary world. Embodied here is the idea that divine wonder and pathos and human solidarity come through in music and storytelling, not just doctrinal argument.”

Cost to attend is $15 for general admission and $ 12 for students. Tickets are available through Ticketmaster or through the Lipscomb University Box Office. Special group rates are available through the Lipscomb University Box Office (call 966.7075 for hours).
