Tennessee's largest sustainability event is on the grow at Lipscomb

Janel Shoun |

Lipscomb University has announced the lineup for its second annual Green Business and Living Summit and Expo, Tennessee’s largest sustainability business conference and green consumer event, happening April 2-4, 2009.

Gary Hirshberg

President and CE-Yo of the world’s largest manufacturer of organic yogurt, Stonyfield Farms, kicks off the 2 ½-day event with a public keynote address and a book signing on Thursday, April 2.

Joel Makower

Founder of GreenerWorld Media, Inc., and the sustainability consultant the Associated Press once dubbed “the guru of green business practices" will deliver the keynote the Business Summit luncheon on Friday, April 2.

Admission to the Green Expo and the Hirshberg keynote address on April 2 is free if registered online prior to April 1.

The energizing lineup is announced in the wake of President Barak Obama’s signing the $787 billion American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, an economic stimulus package proponents of green business are heralding as landmark in America's transition to a lower carbon economy.

“Every day, more and more consumers and corporations are joining the journey toward living, working and being green, and having a positive impact on our world in a very profitable manner," said Dodd Galbreath, Executive Director of the Institute for Sustainable Practice at Lipscomb University.

“The Green Business Summit and Expo will spotlight the best of what our region has to offer, and we’ve designed everything so participants of either track – business or general living – will leave with renewed energy, awareness and optimism about creating jobs and making a difference by getting involved.”

The event promotes a sustainability focus along two tracks:

The Green Business Summit, for sustainability-minded companies with interests in building, energy, transportation, office, electronics, waste elimination, and the environment The Green Living Expo, this consumer-oriented show experienced more than a thousand visitors in its first year with a miscellany of green products, programs, seminars and other activities.

"The region’s most sustainable businesses are stepping up in very impressive ways,” said event director Teresa Wade. “We’re fortunate in that, even after one year, the event has become the single best place for green minded folks to be. People appreciate how we’re welcoming of all levels of green practices, whether a novice or expert in the field.”

The annual green event is the creation of Lipscomb University’s Institute of Sustainable Practice and the College of Business, conducted in alliance with state and local business leaders, to promote Tennessee as a central destination for economic growth in green practices, businesses, products, services, tourism and lifestyles.

The event begins with a community wide kick-off led by state and local business leaders on Thursday evening, April 2nd, at Lipscomb University’s Allen Arena. Highlights of the event include:
