Summer camp designed for academically talented middle school students set for July

 |

Lipscomb University is offering two five-day summer day camps for academically talented middle school students July 10-14 and July 17-21.

The program, called Guided Enrichment for Middle Students (G.E.M.S.), is designed for students entering grades 6-8 in the 2006-07 school year. During the camp, students will participate in a variety of educational and cultural activities that are directed by Lipscomb faculty, said Carroll Wells, professor of mathematics at Lipscomb and program co-director.

During the camps, students will be enrolled in four 90-minute classes each day for five days. Classes they can choose from are “Hands on Geometry,” “CSI: In Cold Blood,” “Ceramics,” “Painting,” “Experiences in Physics,” Experiences in Drama and Music,” “Nature Study,” “Computer Science,” “Sign Language” and “Creative Writing.”
Students can attend one or both weeks of camp. Because students can pick only four classes per week, attending both weeks will allow students to take classes they’ll miss the first time around.

“Students will have the opportunity to develop skills, expand interests and make friends with young people who have similar interests. This also gives them the opportunity to attend classes on a university campus,” said Wells.
Most courses will be taught by Lipscomb campus school and university faculty. The registration fee for G.E.M.S. is $300 for each five-day camp and $500 for both camps. The fee includes instruction, supplies, lunches and a t-shirt. Deadline for registration is June 15.
