Barry Stowe, chief executive of Prudential Corporation Asia, has been named Lipscomb University’s 2009 Alumnus of the Year.

A 1979 graduate of Lipscomb, Stowe is responsible for Prudential’s network of life insurance, fund management and consumer finance operations spanning 13 diverse markets across Asia. He will be honored at a luncheon and at Lipscomb University’s spring commencement on May 9, where he will address graduates and their families.

“The Alumnus of the Year Award is presented on an annual basis and is the highest form of recognition given by Lipscomb University and The National Alumni Association. Barry Stowe exemplifies the Christian business leader we hold up to our students, alumni and community. We are so proud to claim him as one of our alums,” said Mark Meador, senior director of alumni and parent relations at Lipscomb.

The award is given annually to an alumnus who “is a successful individual who, through exemplary accomplishments and recognition, and through his/her strong faith and servant-like heart, epitomizes the potential of a Lipscomb education and thereby brings credit and honor to the university.”

In Asia, Prudential is the leading Europe-based life insurer in terms of market coverage and number of top three positions, with more than 425,000 employees and agents across the region and over 11 million customers. Prudential is also one of Asia’s largest asset managers, with operations in ten markets and £36.8 billion in assets under management in Asia (as at 31 December 2008). Prudential manages funds on behalf of a wide range of retail and institutional investors, including life and pension products sold by Prudential.

Prior to joining Prudential in October 2006, Stowe was President of Accident & Health Worldwide for AIG Life Companies, based in Hong Kong and overseeing more than 100 operations across six continents. Under his leadership, AIG became the global market leader in Accident & Health insurance, leveraging rapidly-evolving dynamics between consumers, governments and the medical industry. Stowe was also pivotal in building the Accident & Health unit into one of AIG’s most profitable businesses, accounting for over 30% of AIG Life Companies’ total earnings by 2005.

In addition to his eleven years with AIG, Stowe’s career in the insurance industry includes his tenure as President & CEO of Nisus, a subsidiary of the Pan American Life Insurance Company, and several leadership positions at Willis Corroon, a global risk management and insurance brokerage based in the U.S. Stowe has been a member of the Board of Directors of Prudential plc since November 2006 and also of the Life Insurance Marketing Research Association (LIMRA) and the Life Office Management Association (LOMA) since October 2008.

Stowe and his wife, Sherri (Stewart ’79), have three daughters, Anne Carter Stowe, 16; Mary Charles Stowe, 13; and Lillian Stowe, 8. A native of Nashville, Stowe attended David Lipscomb Campus School along with his brother, William, a 1976 graduate of Lipscomb University.
