Each year, Lipscomb’s Campus Ministry team works to bring Christian leaders from different industries to encourage the Lipscomb community in its Gathering chapel.

On Tuesday, Christian singer-songwriter Ellie Holcomb, joined Lipscomb’s Gathering chapel to share her faith journey, as well as her Scripture-inspired music.

“I grew up in the church, but I always felt like I wasn’t a good Christian because I was struggling with so much in my personal life,” Holcomb said. “I realized through God’s word and my music that it’s okay not to be okay.”

A Nashville-native, Holcomb first appeared in the music scene with her husband Drew Holcomb, as a member of his band, Drew Holcomb and the Neighbors. After touring with and writing for the group, Holcomb said she felt God pulling her to write the promises of His scriptures that were so heavily weighing on her heart.

Drew encouraged her to leave the band and pursue her calling to write what God was speaking to her and share those songs of authenticity and brokenness with others. Although she was unsure if she should share her music, Holcomb said she could not ignore God’s call to share His truths.

“My music comes from sitting in God’s word and asking him to help me believe the truths that come from His word,” said Holcomb. “I’m also very inspired by the stories of David and how honest he was in his pursuit of God’s heart.”

Since leaving the Drew’s band, Ellie has released her first full-length album, As Sure As the Sun, received a Dove Award for New Artist of the Year in 2014, and has gone on numerous tours and speaking engagements to encourage young women through God’s word and her music.

Students on campus left the Gathering feeling inspired by Holcomb’s willingness to be so open on stage. Taylor Lingreen, a junior at Lipscomb, commented on her experience Tuesday.

"I love when Ellie Holcomb comes to speak because you can sense how real she is,” Lingreen said. “Not to mention her singing is beautiful!"

Ellie returned to campus later that evening to host "Delight in the Lord,” a women's spiritual event hosted by Lipscomb’s Campus Ministry program. The event sought to bring young women on Lipscomb’s campus together for a night of worship and encouragement through God’s word. This was Holcomb’s second time hosting the event on campus.

“Authentic, wise and relatable,” said Nicole Eaton, women’s campus minister at Lipscomb. “Ellie shared rich truth with refreshing honesty and vulnerability.

“New things are happening within women’s ministry on campus this year, and it was great to have Ellie here as we kick things off.”
