Early in the morning of January 2, the Lipscomb University A Cappella Singers boarded the bus to begin their annual winter performance tour. The ensemble will travel from Tennessee, Georgia, and Alabama throughout the weekend, to be back in Nashville on January 6 for students to begin second semester classes the next day.
As per tradition, the A Cappella Singers perform both sacred and secular music from all time periods. Directed by Gary P. Wilson, chair of the classical Music Program and professor at Lipscomb, the group is comprised of about 35 undergraduate students of a variety of majors.
The tour will consist of performances at churches and schools as well as the 41st Christian College Choral Festival, an event hosted by Faulkner University. The festival includes a full day of rehearsal and a concert where the ensemble will perform two individually prepared pieces and five pieces with choirs from other Church of Christ colleges. This year the festival will be conducted by Dr. David Cherwien from the National Lutheran Choir.
The Singers will take advantage of their time on the road with performances at the church homes of both current and former ensemble members and Lipscomb alumni. Their time in Montgomery, Alabama will also include a visit to the National Memorial for Peace and Justice, informally known as the National Lynching Memorial.
Further performance dates, locations and times include:
-
Jan 4 -- Greater Atlanta Christian School; Atlanta, Georgia; 8 a.m with a second performance and recruiting event with students to follow.
-
Jan 5 -- The Montgomery Performing Arts Centre; Montgomery, Alabama; 7 p.m.
-
Jan 6 -- Grace Pointe Church; Montgomery, Alabama; 9 a.m.
The A Cappella Singers have been a feature of the Lipscomb University Department of Music since 1960, and have performed across the country and around the world, in venues ranging from the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, France and the City Hall in downtown Brisbane, Australia, to a small church building in rural Alabama. The group takes a tour in the winter every year and makes a trip overseas every other year.
The choir is one of many ensembles included in the School of Music, housed in the Lipscomb University George Shinn College of Entertainment and the Arts. Recently named one of the top 25 in the country, the school holds a fully accredited membership in the National Association of Schools of Music.
