School of Communication students recognized for excellence at awards competitions

Lipscomb University’s School of Communication students have been recognized for their work with recent awards and nominations at regional and national competitions.
Communication students made an impressive showing at the Southeast Journalism Conference (SEJC) held Jan. 31-Feb. 1 at Mississippi State University in Starkville.
College journalists representing 27 universities competed across 30 categories at the 37th annual SEJC Best of the South Awards.
Students who were Best of the South finalists were recognized for their work that was published, aired or distributed from November 2023 through November 2024. They are:
- Hanna Brazeal, Fourth Place, Best Radio Feature Reporter
- Joey Dwyer, First Place, Best Sports Writer
- The Bison, Second Place, Best Radio Station
During the conference several individuals and teams participated in the on-site competition. Lipscomb had three finalists:
- Jeikof Alfaro, Second Place (tie), Media Law
- Micah Barkley, Third Place, Feature Writing
- Miranda Hart and Gracie Stanley, First Place, Public Relations
This was the second consecutive year Lipscomb has placed first in the public relations category.
In addition, Lipscomb was nominated for three Intercollegiate Broadcasting System (IBS) awards for the first time. Students and the categories nominated in are:
- Best Newscast- Herd Media News Update: Sam Morgan, Cari Willer, Lillian Moore, Hanna Brazeal
- Best Sports Play-by-Play (Men's Basketball): Brandon Bigsby Play-By-Play - ASUN Men's Basketball Quarter Final Highlights
- Best Podcast- Second Chances- Jeikof Alfaro
Winners will be announced at the IBS conference in NYC March 7-8.
