Samuels named 2011 Distinguished Marketer by NAMA

Deby K. Samuels, vice president for university communication and marketing, was named 2011 Distinguished Marketer of the Year by the Nashville Chapter of the American Marketing Association (NAMA) at its annual Achievement in Marketing Awards May 11.

Samuels was selected from among three finalists representing other Nashville organizations including Vanderbilt University Medical Center and Cheekwood Botanical Garden & Museum of Art.

“Deby’s expertise and leadership has played a key role in elevating the image and reputation of Lipscomb University in the Nashville community. She has a great spirit working for an institution that is changing daily. She has worked diligently, along with her staff, to broaden the university’s communication and marketing efforts. In her short time here, Deby has relocated the offices, added positions to the staff and has led the university through a very vital process of brand discovery which will help us strengthen our message to the community,” said President L. Randolph Lowry.

Samuels joined the Lipscomb team in September 2009. Her 37-year marketing career began in the creative department of an advertising agency in Abilene, Texas. She has worked with several agencies including Nashville’s Dye, Van Mol and Lawrence and the Buntin Agency. Samuels led the marketing team for Brentwood-based Comdata and served as vice president of marketing communications for AmSurg Corp. prior to coming to Lipscomb. Her client experience includes such brands as HCA, Gaylord Entertainment, Wal-Mart, American Healthcare (now Healthways), United Methodist Communications, MacGregor Golf, Hartmann Luggage, Martha White Foods and the State of Tennessee Departments of Economic and Community Development and Tourism.

A 1972 graduate of Lipscomb University, Samuels also holds a master’s degree in journalism from the University of Missouri.
