Reflections puts the spotlight on students, Dec. 8-10

Janel Shoun-Smith |

Lipscomb debuted its first dance spotlight performance this past spring, the Choreographer's Canvas.

University's new dance troupe, Foundation Dance Theatre, will be featured in "Reflections," Dec. 8-10

Students in Lipscomb University’s directing, acting and dance classes, along with the university’s new company Foundation Dance Theatre, will perform selected numbers and scenes from various plays in “Reflections,” the Department of Theatre’s semester-end student showcase, Dec. 8-10, 7:30 p.m. in Shamblin Theatre.

Each evening will feature dance routines including a Bob Fosse-inspired jazz number, a jazz and hip-hop fusion, and a romantic jazz piece. Scenes from nine plays will be performed throughout the run, with four different scenes performed each evening. As many as 50 students are involved in the student-directed and performed works.

Scenes will be performed from plays such as “Peter and Starcatcher,” “Almost, Maine,” “The Understudy,” “The Last Days of Judas Iscariot” and “Vanya, Sonia, Masha and Spike.”

“Reflections,” offers audiences a chance to see every aspect of Lipscomb theater, from design to dance to acting, as well as to see the up-and-coming talent in Lipscomb theater, said Justin Boccitto, director of the performance and an artist-in-residence in the Department of Theatre. Boccitto is a long-time performer, director and producer and the co-founder of The Group Theatre Too in New York City.

Lipscomb’s Kari Smith and Leigh Ann Ervin, both adjunct professors and co-founders of the Foundation Dance Theatre, will also direct dance routines for the performance.

“Reflections” will debut the university’s new dance company to the campus. The company, directed by Boccitto, Smith and Ervin, is open to students of any major. Its mission is to create movement that tells strong stories and explores all styles of dance including jazz, modern, tap, theatre, hip-hop and more.

The Student Government Association has purchased 200 tickets available to Lipscomb University students for free. Students should also watch for a sneak peek of the performance presented in Bison Square on Tuesday, Dec. 2.

Tickets are $17 for individuals, $12 for local university faculty and $5 for students of any age. Tickets can be purchased at the Lipscomb Box Office, by calling 615.966.7077 or online at www.lipscomb.edu/theatre.
