Pulitzer Prize-winning <em>Gamma Rays</em> to show in Lipscomb Theater Feb. 28-March 2

The Lipscomb University theater department presents the Pulitzer Prize-winning “The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds,” performed at 7:30 p.m., Feb. 28-March 2, in the Lipscomb University Theater. The play is free and open to the public.

This winner of the Obie Award and New York Drama Critics Circle Award, depicts the relationship of a vindictive mother with her two young daughters. Encouraged by her teacher, daughter Tillie conducts a gamma ray experiment with marigolds that wins a prize at her high school. But Tillie’s mother Beatrice cannot accept or praise her daughter’s success.

The play struck a chord with audiences when it showed on Broadway in the 1970s and continues to be relevant, exploring many of the issue families struggle with today including single-parenthood, alcoholism, loneliness and economic obstacles.

The cast includes Lipscomb students Ashley Thompson, Erin Randolph, Taylor Johnson, Caitlin Nicholas and Melissa Moon.
