Prentice Meador headlines second Friends of Library meeting Feb. 8

Janel Shoun |

For all those who have spent countless hours silently studying in Beaman Library, here’s your chance to go to the library for a little fun… and you don’t even have to be quiet!

Lipscomb University’s Student Government Association will host a reception for the newly formed Friends of Beaman Library at 6 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 8, in the library. The reception, open to current Friends and the general public, will feature Prentice Meador, pulpit minister for the Prestoncrest church of Christ in Dallas, Texas; a display of memorabilia from Lipscomb’s theater program throughout the years; and refreshments.

Meador, an alumnus of Lipscomb University and well known from Lipscomb’s Summer Celebration lectures, will speak on the role of libraries and our needs as an academic institution.

Meador, a Lipscomb trustee, is known for his research and expertise on the life of C.S. Lewis and has led several trips to England to study Lewis’ life. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Illinios and has taught communications at California, Washington and Missouri universities. Meador has authored several books including Stories That Astonish, Walk With Me, and The Great Story.

Meador has long been a friend to the Beaman Library. He feels strongly about the importance of the library and his commitment led him to become the first “unofficial friend,” before the group even started.

“Dr. Meador is an excellent choice to talk about the benefits of being a Friend of the Library. He has spent much time in our facilities doing research for his sermons and teachings,” said Carolyn Wilson, director of the library. “He has first-hand knowledge of the many ways in which Beaman Library serves our students, staff, faculty, alumni and the community.”

The Friends of Beaman Library was started in 2006 in an effort to get people involved in long-term support of the library. Lipscomb’s Student Government Association helped form the group, which has had a good response from the Lipscomb community, Wilson said.
