Pharmacy Board of Visitors meets for first time

The inaugural Board of Visitors for the Lipscomb University College of Pharmacy held its first meeting on campus on Tuesday, May 20.

The college has gathered together an impressive group of local health care leaders to provide counsel to the dean of the College of Pharmacy and to develop relationships at the state, national and global level to advance the College of Pharmacy. The Board of Visitors will meet two times a year.

“We are honored to be partnering with key leadership in the pharmacy profession and in health care services. Our Board of Visitors will provide the College of Pharmacy with insight into the immediate issues of today while also helping build a vision for the future,” said pharmacy dean Roger Davis.

Members of the inaugural board are:

Bo Bartholomew, CEO, PharmMD
As president, CEO and a founder, Bartholomew has led the development of PharmMD’s services and products with a team of clinical and IT experts from around the country. Prior to that, Bartholomew served as vice president of business development for Integration Management, Inc. Earlier, Mr. Bartholomew served as associate administrator for Centennial Medical Center in Nashville, and as associate administrator for HCA’s StoneCrest Medical Center in Smyrna. Mr. Bartholomew serves on the board of the Center for Bioethics and Culture and the education and events committee for Leadership Healthcare.

Janet Calhoun, senior vice president of product development and management, Healthways
Calhoun is also the executive director for the Healthways/Medco New Product Development Collaborative. In this role she leads the strategic planning efforts for a variety of next generation solutions to leverage and integrate pharmacy therapy management, health, wellness and condition management services. Since 1995, she has been instrumental in the development and evolution of Healthways’ suite of health and care support programs, focusing on both long-range strategic planning and tactical product design, development, and implementation.

Dick Cowart, health care attorney, Baker Donelson Bearman Caldwell & Berkowitz
Cowart is the chairman of the health law department and public policy department of Baker Donelson and is the past president of the American Health Lawyers Association. Cowart is a nationally known speaker and writer on health care issues and is recognized as an authority on the legal, regulatory and business issues related to health care services.

Bill Hix, senior commercial officer, Cumberland Pharmaceuticals
Hix joined Cumberland in 2004 to form and manage the national sales force promoting the acute care product line to hospitals, poison control centers and physicians. He was also instrumental in the design and implementation of Cumberland's field sales force which is responsible for promoting Company products in the gastroenterology market.

Joey Jacobs, CEO, Psychiatric Solutions
Jacobs co-founded PSI and has served as chairman, president and chief executive officer since April 1997. Prior to that, Jacobs served for 21 years in various capacities with HCA, most recently as president of the Tennessee division.

Don Nickleson, CEO, Comprehensive Pharmacy Services
As president, CEO and CPA, Nickleson’s responsibilities include establishing strategic direction, corporate leadership and serving on the board of directors. He has more than 20 years of organizational leadership and formerly served as the regional president of U.S. Office Products.

Dr. Jonathan Perlin, chief medical officer, HCA
As president of the Clinical Services Group at HCA, the nation’s leading provider of healthcare services, Dr. Perlin is responsible for clinical strategy and continually improving performance at HCA’s 173 hospitals and 140 outpatient centers. Before joining HCA in 2006, Dr. Perlin was under secretary for health in the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. As the chief executive officer of the Veterans’ Health Administration, he led the nation’s largest integrated health system.

De Anna Smith, CEO, Sarah Cannon Cancer Center
Sarah Cannon Research Institute is one of the nation’s largest clinical research programs. Smith also served as president of services at the cancer center, leading the development of corporate strategy and vision. She is a member of the Drug Information Association, Association of Clinical Research Professionals and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.

Papatya Tankut, vice president of pharmacy professional services, CVS/Caremark
Tankut began her career as a community pharmacist at CVS upon graduation. Over the past 14 years she has held various positions at CVS including manager of professional and college relations and director of pharmacy recruiting and professional relations. In her current role, Tankut develops the company’s pharmacist recruitment strategies and initiatives, overseeing the regulatory compliance, quality assurance, clinical services and patient care programs departments.

The Lipscomb College of Pharmacy Board of Visitors will advise the pharmacy dean and administrators on topics such as:
  • Workforce issues faced by employers
  • Skills needed by new health care employees
  • Health care industry challenges and priorities coming up in the future
  • Strategic planning to achieve college goals
  • New directions in pharmacy
  • Prerequisites needed by students
  • Curriculum development
  • Alumni outreach
  • Fund-raising
