Marie Patterson, assistant professor of physician assistant studies, was appointed by the Tennessee governor in July to the Committee on Physician Assistants, which grants licenses to practice in Tennessee.

“I consider it very important to ensure that Tennessee’s boards and commissions are filled with the most dedicated and qualified citizens. I believe that your participation is certain to leave a positive impact on this board and the work it does,” Governor Bill Haslam stated in the appointment letter to Patterson.

“I always wanted to give back to the community and this committee works to protect the public,” said Patterson of the appointment. “After practicing for 14 years, I feel like I have a good idea of what I need to do to look out for the public’s self-interest.”

Patterson served as the state secretary for the Tennessee Academy of Physician Assistants from 2005 to 2008. She obtained her bachelor’s degree from Freed-Hardman University, her Master of Science in medicine at Trevecca Nazarene University and her Doctor of Health Sciences from Nova Southeastern University.

She began her career in emergency room medicine and then practiced primary health care and occupational health at a walk-in clinic. For the last decade, Patterson has travel health, primary care and acute care at the Middle Tennessee State University Student Health Services.
