Parents invited to campus for Family Weekend, Oct. 3-5

Janel Shoun-Smith |

The Tau Phi Cowboy Show is an annual event during Family Weekend.

Music, pancakes, parenting advice and a 5K are all part of Family Weekend

Lipscomb University understands how important family involvement is for each student who walks its halls. So each year the university holds a special weekend to give students’ families a special glimpse into the college life at Lipscomb, as well as the chance to participate in some fun activities with their students and to meet the faculty and administrators influencing their children’s lives.

Family Weekend, Oct. 3-5, is a jam-packed opportunity to experience the university from a unique perspective. Among a long list of activities for the weekend, families will have the opportunity to spend time at the home of our provost and other faculty members, enjoy parent-specific sessions from faculty and staff members, select from various receptions to attend and enjoy breakfast at Clearview, the home of Lipscomb President L. Randolph Lowry and his wife Rhonda.

“Family Weekend is a special time for me each year because I know firsthand (as I have my own child at Lipscomb now) how important it is for parents to be involved in their child’s college experience,” said Scott McDowell, senior vice president for student life. “Family Weekend offers parents a better understanding of how college is impacting their child and allows students to see true enthusiasm and interest in their development from their parents.

“I also particularly want to point out this year's Laura Eickholz Owen lecturer - Mack Ogren, who will address parents with the theme 'Journey of Transition' and get into specifics about how college changes the parenting experience.”

In addition to the specific Family Weekend events, plenty of art, theater and athletics events will also be going on during this weekend, providing plenty of on-campus and off-campus entertainment options.

Coordinators have worked diligently to provide programs without fees, discounted dining fees and bus transportation.  Families should register for each event they plan to attend, even if there is no cost associated with the event.

“There will be no lacking for entertainment and social or educational activities to strengthen each family’s college experience here at Lipscomb,” said Sonja Hayes, Parent Program director and coordinator of the event. “We have worked hard to plan opportunities that will be of great benefit to every family, while also being budget-friendly and convenient.”
