New graduate education degrees launched, offer 50 percent tuition discount

Lipscomb University announces two new master’s degree programs in education – and a 50 percent tuition discount.

Lipscomb has established a new master of education degree with math specialty, and an online M.Ed. program in instructional technology, said Deborah Boyd, Ed.D, director of graduate education at Lipscomb.

All who enroll in one of the two new programs will receive a 50 percent tuition discount for the first six hours taken in either program. Lipscomb’s graduate education programs are offered to in-service educators at a discount of 26 percent, which will apply to those students following the 50 percent discount period, Boyd said.

Additionally, the existing M.Ed. program in educational leadership has been completely revamped to reflect new state requirements and now includes a unique component in change and conflict management.

“These new programs result from the College of Education’s continuing dialogue with educators and a commitment to delivering programs of excellence that meet under-served needs,” Boyd said. Both programs address content and effective pedagogy.

The online program in instructional technology is Lipscomb’s first fully online program. The degree may be completed as quickly as four semesters and is distinctive because it is presented using the medium that is also the course content.

Participants in the program will only be required to visit Lipscomb’s physical campus – rather than its virtual campus – at the beginning and end of the program for Friday night-Saturday orientation and capstone experiences.

The M.Ed. program with math specialty is a response to the State of Tennessee’s new requirement of four years of secondary school mathematics instruction for all students beginning this fall.

“The need for more high-quality math and science instruction at national and local levels is being driven by the higher skill levels required for students to succeed in today's technological work environments and intensified international competition. These factors, combined with Tennessee's new graduation requirements, have the market scrambling for capable, well-prepared math teachers,” Boyd said.

Lipscomb’s new program is designed to prepare participants for the math PRAXIS exam and licensure after successfully completing the test. PRAXIS assessments provide tests and other services that states use as part of their teacher licensure and certification processes.

The educational leadership master’s degree program has been redesigned to meet new state requirements, but further benefits from unique coursework offered through Lipscomb’s Institute for Conflict Management. The M.Ed. program will include two conflict management courses that address negotiation and mediation.

“These courses are a value added component that will equip administrators and teachers with enhanced leadership skills to address the challenges of today’s schools and improve community collaboration and engagement,” Boyd said.

“Earning a master’s degree is usually an automatic way to increase your pay. The math teacher who is dedicated to excellence, will be in especially high demand here and across the nation because they are preparing for a career in which a nationwide shortage is growing,” Boyd said.

In addition to programs in educational leadership, instructional technology and math specialty, Lipscomb offers the M.Ed. in teaching, learning and leading, a degree program that helps teachers continue to build and expand their knowledge and skills in the profession.

Master of arts programs are offered in special education, learning and teaching, and teaching English language learners.
