Nashville Public Radio's Emily Siner to speak at next Media Masters, Nov. 12

On Monday, Nov. 12, the Department of Communication and Journalism will feature news director and podcast host Emily Siner as part of the 2018-19 Media Masters Series.
The event will be held at 5 p.m. in Lipscomb’s Ezell Center, Room 301. Admission is free and pizza will be provided.
Siner’s experience in both print and online journalism at the Los Angeles Times and NPR has earned her two regional Edward R. Murrow Awards and the title of Associated Press Radio Journalist of the Year. Her work has taken her throughout Tennessee to share national news stories for NPR and Marketplace.
“Journalism allows people to learn about the world around them,” said Siner. “Without journalism, you would never know about people, industries, politics and other issues with which you don’t have firsthand experience.”
Siner began at Nashville Public Radio in 2014 and launched the station’s first podcast Movers & Thinkers, which she hosts. Her part-podcast, part-outreach series is now a nationally acclaimed interview podcast that made Nashville Public Radio a leader in longform audio storytelling.
Siner has used her passion of multi-platform storytelling to develop a significant lineup of shows and events at the station and even spoke in 2015 at TEDxNashville about NPR’s efforts in online audio sharing. On a smaller scale her role as news director allows Siner to work with several talented reporters, editing their work or helping them find the best angle to deliver it.
“I love this, because it allows me to contribute to our most powerful stories -- stories that I probably couldn’t have done myself as a reporter,” said Siner.
Since starting as a reporter in Nashville at age 23, Siner said one of her biggest challenges was being confident in her work because of her youth -- what she calls “imposter syndrome.”
“I struggled with that lack of confidence for a while, until I eventually realized that I was doing good work and improving,” said Siner. “The only thing that helps is to understand that almost everyone goes through it.”
Siner encourages young journalists to explore internship opportunities and to “take yourself seriously as a journalist, even when you’re doing reporting projects for class or for a student publication.”
“Do good work,” said Siner. “Ruffle some feathers.”
