Med school acceptance rate hits 100 percent for year

It's been a great year for the premedical program at Lipscomb University.

Of the 14 students who requested references from the program in the application process, 100 percent have been accepted to medical schools this year, said Dr. Linda Roberson, dean of the College of Natural and Applied Sciences.

The percentage is based on the number of students who applied and were accepted, not the number of applications they submitted to different schools, Roberson said.

While the percentage of acceptance is impressive, what's important is whether the students are prepared for success upon entering medical school, Roberson said.

do have a strong science program ... and the students who go to medical school tell us they are very well prepared. They are very pleased when they get there, that they are well prepared and can easily hold their own with the rest of the class. But whether or not a student goes to medical school depends on that student and how hard they are willing to work," Roberson said.

This year's group was exceptionally hard working and compliant with instructions given by the program, she said.

"It was a group that was willing to work really hard to prepare for the MCAT and do well. They did well in school. This was a really great group of students," Roberson said.

As evidence, included in this year's number is one student who was accepted to medical school after his junior year, and will receive his bachelor's degree from Lipscomb after his first year in medical school. "Acceptance after three years of undergraduate study is unusual," Roberson said.

Lipscomb has a history of exceptional medical school placement rates, averaging around 70 percent annually. The national average is less than half that, but is based on the number of applications submitted, not the number of students applying, Roberson said.
