Mark McGee, senior publisher and director of athletics media relations, was recently named an American Volleyball Coaches Association Grant Burger Award Sports Information Director Honoree NCAA Division I – South Region for his promotion of the Lady Bison Volleyball Team during the 2009-10 season.

“This type of recognition is humbling because people who you don’t know are judging you on your overall body of work,” said McGee. “Awards like these give you validation for what you do every day.”

Other NCAA Div. I honorees included SIDs from the Nebraska, Miami, Michigan, Rice, Notre Dame, Oregon and Long Beach State.

Volleyball Head Coach Brandon Rosenthal said McGee’s work is outstanding.

“After looking at the list of schools that were also awarded it is apparent that the work that Mark is doing is truly exceptional. The complete list is a very impressive list of schools where volleyball is major priority in the athletic hierarchy. Mark has truly set himself apart and has joined an exclusive group. I am proud of what Mark and this program have done. This is a major award and a very big step in making Lipscomb Volleyball a nationally recognized program,” said Rosenthal.

“The efforts of Mark and the sports information staff have been recognized for their efforts and coverage of the 2009 volleyball season. I am very proud and appreciative for the work that Mark has done not just this year but also all the years that I have been associated with this program. This is truly exciting and another example of what this program is all about.  Mark and I spend quite a bit of time on the phone discussing possible story ideas and coverage of matches and players. Mark should be very proud of this award and what it represents. I am truly grateful that Mark is a part of our program and look forward to continued success in the future.”

In 2009, McGee won two CoSIDA writing awards — second place in Event Coverage for "Bisons win first-ever NCAA game with 10-7 decision over Georgia" and third place for Event Coverage with "Bisons game plan from the beginning was a
championship"). He has won seven CoSIDA writing awards since 2004.

McGee also serves an adjunct in the communications department teaching media law, media ethics and news reporting and writing. He is a 1979 graduate of Lipscomb with a degree in business management. He graduated from Nashville School of Law with a Doctor of Jurisprudence degree in 1988. He is a Fellow of the Knight Center for Specialized Journalism at the University of Maryland, an honor received for the study of “The Business of Sports” in 1992.

McGee spent 13 years at the Nashville Banner as a sports writer, earning the title of senior writer. He spent seven years as the editor of the Shelbyville Times-Gazette, a daily newspaper in Middle Tennessee. He has also written for numerous publications ranging from The Sporting News to the Nashville City Paper and Associated Press.
