Mark McGee (’79), director of media relations for athletics, recently claimed two district awards in the 2008 Fred S. Stabley Sr. Writing Contest, the College Sports Information Directors of America (COSIDA) announced earlier this month. The awards are co-sponsored by COSIDA and ESPN.  McGee was awarded second place in the District IV event coverage category for “Lady Bisons break Curb Center spell with 68-52 win over Belmont.” He also tied for third place in the District IV athletic profile category for his article “Jason Hopkins: balancing life on and off the court.”

The contest received a total of 388 entries, with District IV leading the way with 75 entries. All articles were judged first at the district level, with district winners advancing before a national committee. District IV includes the states of Michigan, Ohio, Alabama, Kentucky and Tennessee.

“We have a wonderful group of administrators, coaches and athletes here at Lipscomb. A large part of my job is to tell their stories. To also receive recognition from my peers is icing on the cake,” said McGee, who is in his fifth year with the Lipscomb athletics department.

McGee also serves an adjunct in the communications department teaching Media Law, Media Ethics and News Reporting and Writing. He is a 1979 graduate of Lipscomb with a degree in business management. He graduated from Nashville School of Law with a Doctor of Jurisprudence degree in 1988. He is a Fellow of the Knight Center for Specialized Journalism at the University of Maryland, an honor received for the study of “The Business of Sports” in 1992.

McGee spent 13 years at the now defunct Nashville Banner as a sports writer, earning the title of senior writer. He spent seven years as the editor of the Shelbyville Times-Gazette, a daily newspaper in Middle Tennessee. He has also written for numerous publications ranging from “The Sporting News” to the “Nashville City Paper” and Associated Press. He is a native of Shelbyville and has a daughter, Sarah Margaret.
