When Asha Abdulkadir began her career in health care as a certified nursing assistant, she never imagined that a faulty medical device would spark a passion that would lead her across continents and into the world of technology.
But that’s exactly what happened.
“I was the one people turned to when a device failed,” said Abdulkadir, a native of Moyale in Marsabit County, Kenya. “Over time, I realized just how much I enjoyed figuring out those technical issues. That experience made me want to do more and be someone who helps bring about real change through technology. That’s what led me to Lipscomb University. There, I found the perfect place to combine my curiosity for technology with the leadership skills I wanted to develop."
A senior, Abdulkadir is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in technology management through Lipscomb’s online degree completion program. She’s on track to graduate in December 2025 and she’s already thinking big.
Her pathway to Lipscomb wasn’t a straight line. After studying computer science at Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, Tennessee, Abdulkadir realized she wanted a program that offered more than just technical training. She was looking for something broader and a program that would prepare her to lead.
“Discovering Lipscomb’s technology management program felt like finding the missing piece. I knew right away it was the right path for me,” she said. “What truly motivated me to pursue my degree online at Lipscomb was the program's flexibility, which was a lifesaver for me as both a working professional and a mom juggling a busy schedule. I needed something that would fit into my life, not vice versa.”
“Beyond that I was impressed by how the program combined technical learning with leadership and practical problem-solving skills,” she continued. “The multidisciplinary approach meant I could build strengths in management and communication while also learning how to use technology strategically in business.”
From the start, Abdulkadir said she felt “genuniely supported at Lipscomb,” especially by Ted Meyer, associated director of admissions, who helped ensure a smooth transfer process. She also praised the accessibility of her professors and the university’s emphasis on personal growth.

“The open communication with professors via phone or email made a huge difference in my experience,” she explained. “What stood out most to me was how the program focused on more than just academics.”
The CORE Assessment Center, Lipscomb’s competency-based educational model which awards students up to 30 college credit hour for their prior knowledge, skills and abilities, has been a valuable aspect of Abdulkadir’s experience.
“Learning about the Big Five personality traits helped me understand my leadership style and how I relate to others, which has been incredibly valuable,” she said. “Participating in the was eye-opening. The real-world simulations challenged me to put my leadership skills to the test, everything from strategic thinking to communication and teamwork. The feedback I received from certified assessors was honest and constructive, and it’s helped me see exactly where I can continue to grow as a leader.”
Lipscomb’s technology management program prepared Abdulkadir for what’s next by giving her a unique blend of technical know-how and business insight. She said she learned how to connect the dots between IT and business strategy, making processes smoother and more effective.
“The leadership training, primarily through the CORE Assessment Center, pushed me to step outside my comfort zone, think more strategically and reflect on how I lead and work with others,” shared Abdulkadir. “This experience has helped me grow not just as a professional, but as a person. I feel more confident in my decision-making and more aware of my strengths and areas for growth.”
After graduation, Abdulkadir seeks to step into a leadership role in technology with a focus on cloud computing and AI. She is passionate about using the skills she has built to help organizations find smarter, more efficient ways to operate through technology.
“My dream is to eventually become a Chief Technology Officer (CTO), where I can lead teams that embrace innovation and drive meaningful change in how businesses use technology,” she said. “Thanks to everything I’ve learned in my program, I feel ready and excited to take on these challenges and make a real difference in solving everyday business problems with tech.”
For those who are considering completing their degrees online, Abdulkadir encourages them to embrace the flexibility, stay organized and ask for help.
“Managing your time well is key, especially with the demands of online learning, but the payoff is worth it,” she said. “The technology management program at Lipscomb is a great mix of technical know-how and leadership development. What you learn about connecting technology with business strategy will set you apart.”
Throughout her educational journey, Abdulkadir has had a strong support system to encourage her along the way.
“My family, especially my son, has been my biggest inspiration throughout my journey. Their encouragement and belief in me have kept me motivated, even during the most challenging moments, and remind me daily why perseverance matters,” she said. “My professors at Lipscomb challenged me to aim higher than I thought possible, and the mentors I’ve met in the tech world have completely changed how I see the connection between technology and business. Their support and advice have fueled my excitement for business-driven IT management, and I can honestly say that having them in my corner has made this experience so much more meaningful for me.”
