Lipscomb's first African-American graduate shares stories of experience as student at Lipscomb

 |

Harry Kellam, Lipscomb University's first African-American graduate, spoke Nov. 10 at the campus as part of “Freedom at Lipscomb” week, sponsored by the Student Government Association's Academic Committee.

Kellam spoke to students, faculty, staff and members of the community about his experiences as a student at Lipscomb. He currently serves as the VIST coordinator at the Alvin C. York VA Medical Center in Murfreesboro, Tenn.

A native of Alabama, Kellam graduated from Lipscomb in 1968. He was honored by Lipscomb at Homecoming 1998 as the Outstanding Alumnus from the College of Education and Professional Studies in recognition of his pioneering spirit and perseverance during times of great racial conflict, in honor of his lifetime of quiet, diligent service to individuals ranging from at-risk children to the disabled and aging as well as to those who have served our country in the military, and in appreciation for his efforts and support of the social work program at Lipscomb.
