Lipscomb University presents one-day seminar, "America and the World: 2010," with Don Cole March 22

 |

Lipscomb University will host a one-day seminar entitled "America and the World: 2010" on March 22 from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in Shamblin Theatre, 3901 Granny White Pike, Nashville.

The seminar will focus on America's role in the world as it pertains to relationships with other countries and what can be expected over the next five years as the global economy and technological developments evolve. Don Cole, director of Lipscomb's Center for International Peace and Justice and visiting professor of political science, will be the featured speaker during the seminar.

"We, as a nation, are bombarded every day with bits of news informing us about what is going on throughout the world," said Cole.  "We hope that this seminar will provide some framework through which to view these events.  During the seminar, we will discuss major issues that tend to be enduring over time and some that are likely to change in the coming years.  We will look at what America's future relations with the Islamic world appear to be as well as where relations with other countries such as Russia and China appear to be heading."

Cole said the focus of the seminar is about "trying to find a framework that will allow us to make sense out of our current situation and to provide a context with which to understand our relationship with respect to the rest of the world as it develops in the next five years.

"Of course, whenever we look five years ahead and make predictions, those predictions are fraught with risk.  However, we hope to minimize that risk by looking at a complete range of options - the best-case scenarios, worst-case scenarios and most likely case scenarios."

Cole is a retired Air Force officer, former Senior National Security Policy Officer at the State Department and former Deputy Political Advisor to the Commander in Chief of U.S. Command.

The cost to attend the seminar is $40 and the event is open to the public. Reservations must be made by March 15. A complimentary box lunch is included with the seminar. Lipscomb's Lifelong Learning program and the office of the Provost will provide the lunches.
