Lipscomb University, Parnassus Books partner to present She Loves Me, Nov. 3-12

November brings the classic storyline that inspired the Tom Hanks blockbuster hit “You’ve Got Mail” to Lipscomb University’s Collins Alumni Auditorium as Lipscomb Theatre presents She Loves Me, a romantic comedy with a soaring score, Nov. 3-12. Show times include: Nov. 3, 4, 10 and 11 at 7:30 p.m. as well as Nov. 5 and 12 at 2:30 p.m.
Sponsored by Parnassus Books in Nashville, Lipscomb’s fall musical features an all-student cast and crew, and is directed by Beki Baker, chair of the Lipscomb theatre department.
From the writers of Fiddler on the Roof, Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick, and winner of Broadway’s Best Revival in 2016, She Loves Me is set in the 1930s and tells the story of European perfumery shop clerks, Amalia and Georg, who don't see eye to eye, but who both respond to a "lonely hearts” advertisement in the newspaper. The pair soon lives for the love letters that they exchange to one another, but the identities of their admirers remain unknown.
“She Loves Me is a charming, unpretentious, romantic comedy about friendship, love and courage. While our current world centers on aggression and cynicism, this musical offers simplicity and warmth,” said Baker. “The lead characters fall in love through letters, even though they don't know it's each other. It's hard to navigate the realities of getting to know someone, much less to fall in love. In classic romantic-style–think Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennett–they have the difficult task of getting over each other in person.”
David Weinstein, a highly sought after musician with Broadway credits, serves as the music director and conductor, and Kari Smith, adjunct professor at Lipscomb, serves as choreographer.
Scott Baker, marketing and community outreach coordinator for Lipscomb Theatre, says that Lipscomb’s partnership with Parnassus Books as a sponsor helps better connect Lipscomb Theatre with the greater Nashville community.
“As a theatre department we believe it is vital to continually cultivate relationships with the community,” said Scott Baker. “Parnassus is a local independent book store in Green Hills that is well known for serving the community. We believe this partnership is a great fit for our fall musical because it not only helps connect us with community members through Parnassus, but in She Loves Me, the main characters connect over their shared love of great books.”
