As spring draws near, Lipscomb University’s campus is preparing for one of student life’s most cherished events: Singarama.

For over 50 years, more than 16,000 Lipscomb students have participated in this highly popular student show that incorporates members of various student groups including all 12 of Lipscomb’s social clubs.

Opening Thursday, March 3 at 7:30 p.m. and running through Saturday, March 5 in Lipscomb’s Collins Alumni Auditorium, this year's theme is "Revolution - Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.”

Students are tasked with developing a story line from their category title, writing scripts, choosing eight songs with choreography to incorporate into their show as well as designing and building their own sets.

The shows are also evaluated by a panel of 18 judges, competing in three categories (theme, music and staging) and in overall sweepstakes points.

Each year, Lipscomb social clubs are divided into the three categories and this year include:

  • Life (Delta Nu, Delta Sigma, Phi Sigma, Theta Psi)
  • Liberty (Alpha Zeta, Pi Delta, Sigma Omega Sigma, Tau Phi)
  • Happiness (Delta Omega, Kappa Chi, Phi Nu, Sigma Iota Delta)

Emily Ann Ray, a junior in Phi Sigma, is directing the show, “The Best Day of Your Life” and explained how she loves the way Singarama unites different student groups on campus.

“Singarama has always been one of my favorite things,” said Ray. “I think it’s a great way to get to know people that you otherwise may never come in contact with. I also think because this is a competition everyone in each group really gets into it with the same goal in mind and I think that really allows everyone to work well together. It’s just really fun.”

One of the highly anticipated aspects of the event is the hosts and hostesses of the evening. After an audition process, six students including Delaney Brown, Michaela Genz, Ashton Montgomery, Warren Lipscomb, D.A. Lowery and Grant Parker, were chosen to be this year's hosts and hostesses. They will provide the entertainment between shows, including group and solo numbers.

Singarama’s student coordinators including Megan Grant, Claire Grissom and Adawoa Osei are working behind the scenes to produce this year’s show along with Laurie Sain, Singarama’s producer and director, as well as the residence hall director in Fanning.

Sain has taken over for Sarah Keith Gamble who had produced and directed the show for the past 30 years. Although this is Sain’s first year producing and directing the show, she has been involved in the university production for years working alongside her husband, Aaron Sain, who is the music director for the hosts and hostesses each year.

The 2016 shows include:

  • Thursday, March 3 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $15.
