Lipscomb University graduate student Claire Edmondson has been named a finalist for the prestigious Fulbright U.S. Student Program and will travel to Athens, Greece, this fall to serve as an English Teaching Assistant.

Edmondson, a Nashville native who will receive her Master of Arts in archaeology and biblical studies from Lipscomb this spring, will begin her Fulbright assignment in August at the Athens College-Hellenic American Educational Foundation. Her selection marks Lipscomb’s 20th Fulbright finalist in university history.

“I am incredibly excited and honored to have been named a Fulbright finalist,” said Edmondson “This is a wonderful opportunity that I am grateful to have received.”

As part of her Fulbright assignment, Edmondson will support English-language instruction and cultural exchange in Greece. Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, the Fulbright U.S. Student Program is one of the nation’s most competitive international exchange programs, designed to foster mutual understanding between the people of the United States and other countries through academic study, research and teaching opportunities abroad.

“This prestigious honor reflects Claire’s hard work, her love of learning and her desire to serve others through cross-cultural engagement. We are thrilled to celebrate her selection as a Fulbright finalist,” said Lipscomb President Candice McQueen. “This recognition reflects the kind of transformative education we strive to provide at Lipscomb and our continued leadership as a top-tier, nationally recognized university.”

Jennifer Shewmaker, Lipscomb University provost, said Edmondson’s recognition reflects the caliber of students and scholarship found across the university.

“Claire’s selection as a Fulbright finalist is a remarkable achievement,” said Shewmaker. “Her work in archaeology and biblical studies reflects the depth of scholarship taking place at Lipscomb, and we are proud of the way she will represent this university and our mission on an international stage.”

Edmondson came to Lipscomb to pursue graduate study in archaeology and biblical studies through the university’s Lanier Center for Archaeology after earning her undergraduate degree in classics from the University of Iowa. Her academic work has focused on deepening her understanding of archaeology, faith and the ancient world. During her time at Lipscomb, Edmondson volunteered and interned with the Lanier Center for Archaeology, assisting with conferences, Bisons Weekend open house events and management of archaeological collections housed in Beaman Library. She credits the Lipscomb community with playing a formative role in both her academic and spiritual growth.

“My Lipscomb experience has been great,” Edmondson said. “The faculty and staff within my program and outside of my program have been incredibly supportive and helpful in not only my academics, but also personally.”

Following completion of her Fulbright assignment, Edmondson plans to pursue a doctorate in classical or archaeological studies and hopes to build a career in archaeology and higher education.
