Lipscomb University announces first doctoral program in education

Lipscomb University announces a doctorate of education beginning in fall 2010.

 

The Doctorate of Education (Ed.D.) in Learning Organizations and Strategic Change is focused on preparing leaders for both academic settings and public and private organizations. This is the first doctorate offered by Lipscomb’s College of Education.

 

The university is offering a 20 percent discount for full-time educators who enroll in the 54-hour program, and, unlike many such programs, Lipscomb will accept some transfer credits toward completion of the Ed.D.

 

“We have been rapidly building our master’s programs in education, doubling our graduate enrollment in the last two years. In addition, we continually get requests from people interested in earning an Ed.D. from Lipscomb,” said Candice McQueen, dean of the College of Education. “A leadership and ethics-focused program is certainly in demand in our community, and the graduates will go on to enhance the quality of educational settings for Middle Tennessee’s K-12 students as well as use it to build strong adult education programs within a variety of organizations.”

 

Lipscomb’s Ed.D. is an accelerated model offering night, weekend and online courses with significant clinical education experiences over the course of two years, a shorter time than other local programs. The Ed.D. will require a team-based capstone project involving consulting work with a local organization during the entire second year of the program. It will also incorporate both international and entrepreneurship components in the courses and field experiences.

 

“This program takes a practical real-world approach to teaching leadership,” said McQueen. “Lipscomb is well-known locally for enhancing the practical application of research and theory in a number of disciplines. This program builds on that expertise to provide another important benefit to the education system: graduates who can apply strong leadership and ethical skills to learning methods and behaviors.”
