Kristine Hoang, P3, was named one of the nine Pharmacy Quality Alliance 2019-20 PQA-CVS Health Foundation Scholars selected from across the nation.

Now in its fourth year, the scholars program supports Doctor of Pharmacy students who will conduct a quality improvement project during the academic year with the support of a faculty mentor. Other scholars selected hailed from the universities of North Carolina, Tennessee, Mississippi and Colorado.

Hoang, working under the mentorship of Dr. Sarah Uroza, assistant professor, is evaluating a comprehensive diabetes management program that takes place one day every other month at Faith Family Medical Center. The clinic serves primarily uninsured patients in the Nashville area. In her analysis, she will be incorporating PQA quality measurements, clinical outcomes and patient perception.

“I am honored for this opportunity to work on a pharmacy quality improvement project for a topic that I am passionate about,” Kristine said about the program. “I think quality improvement will be a part of my future practice regardless of where I end up, so this is a valuable learning experience.”

“Supporting the next generation of health care quality professionals is an important part of PQA’s mission,” said Laura Cranston, PQA chief executive officer. “Partnering with the CVS Health Foundation, we are thrilled to support nine high-caliber students from across the nation, who will develop and complete a research project related to quality and performance-based models and quality metrics.”

The scholars will receive a stipend to attend the PQA Annual Meeting and the PQA Leadership Summit to support their education and professional networking in quality and performance measurement and value-based care. They will present a poster of their project at the 2020 PQA Annual Meeting, May 13-15, in Baltimore, MD. The top three projects, as judged by a PQA-appointed panel, will receive special recognition and an additional scholarship award.

The Pharmacy Quality Alliance is an organization dedicated to measuring and optimizing the quality of medication use.
