Lipscomb senior heads to spring training for the Angels

Lipscomb senior Tadd Brewer left March 3 for spring training in Tempe, Ariz., after being drafted by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim as a second baseman. Brewer, a Sturgis, Ky., native who played two years of baseball at Lipscomb, was drafted in the 17th round last June. He is living out his dream.

“I started playing baseball when I was old enough to pick up a bat,” states Brewer. “I will be here in Tempe until the first week of April when I report to one of the minor league teams. A lot of hard work went into reaching this point.”

Brewer knew that being drafted meant the beginning of a sought-after career for him. He made sure he kept everything in perspective, however. Brewer completed all of his necessary course work so he would receive his degree from Lipscomb this May.

“My major is business management and my minor is marketing. I was really blessed to have teachers willing to work with me. I finished up my last class the day before I left,” he states. “Lipscomb has given me the opportunity to fulfill my dream of playing division one baseball as well as getting a well respected business degree. This is where I developed as a player and grew as a person. Lipscomb has prepared me for the real world after baseball and helped me grow in my Christian walk.”

Brewer’s family has been supportive of his hopes of playing major league baseball one day. “My parents are Larry and Kathy Brewer. I have one sister, Kassie. All three of them are teachers in our county. This has allowed them to have summers off so they could travel with me on summer teams and support me along the way. They are my biggest fans.”

As the Lipscomb campus slows down for spring break, Brewer works harder than ever in spring training to make sure he keeps moving forward with his baseball career. So far, all of his hard work has paid off.
