Lipscomb QuestWeek brings hundreds of volunteers to local charities

 |

Several hundred Lipscomb University freshmen and transfer students will start their Lipscomb college career off next week with QuestWeek, a week of fun and educational events including an afternoon of community service at 20 local charities throughout Nashville.

On Thursday, Aug. 17, at 1-4 p.m., close to 300 freshmen are expected to scatter around town doing landscaping, arts and crafts, sorting donations, hauling and cleaning equipment and stocking canned goods for a variety of benevolence organizations.

Lipscomb freshmen will be donating time and muscle at:

  • First Steps Inc., 4414 Granny White Pike
First Steps Inc. is a child development center providing early intervention and educational services for children with disabilities. Students will be playing with children on the playground, doing yard work, moving items to storage and cleaning toys.
  • Monroe-Harding Children’s Home, 1120 Glendale Lane
Monroe-Harding provides residential programs for at-risk youth, ages 16-21, who have been removed from their homes due to abuse, neglect or minor behavioral problems. Students will be doing landscaping at the children’s home.
  • Carestone of Brentwood, 5436 Edmonson Pike
Carestone is an assisted living facility for the elderly. Students will be doing arts and crafts with the residents.
  • Nashville Rescue Mission, 639 Lafayette Street
The Rescue Mission offers meals, shelter and recovery programs for the homeless of downtown Nashville. Students will be stocking can goods and sorting clothing in the warehouse.

Other Nashville charities slated for community service include Nashville Cares, Safe Haven Family Shelter, Harpeth Hills Church of Christ, Feed America First, Youth Encouragement Services McIver Street Center, YWCA, Ronald McDonald House, Church of Christ Disaster Relief, Campus for Human Development, Healing Hands International, Nashville Humane Association, Habitat for Humanity, Friends of Warner Parks, Matthew 25, The Meadows of Lakeshore Estates and McKendree Village.

The day of community service is just one of a week of events for freshmen, including an outdoor “Olympics;” quiz game shows; important information on campus life, resources and challenges; and lots of Mountain Dew.

Classes on campus begin Monday, Aug. 21, and freshmen begin moving into residence halls on Monday, Aug. 14. Lipscomb faculty and staff will don Superman T-shirts to help freshmen carry the load on move-in day.
