Abilene Christian University will present Dr. John York with a Distinguished Alumni Citation on Sunday, Nov. 9, at 2 p.m., in the Doris Swang Chapel on the Lipscomb University, with a reception to follow in the Paul Rogers Board Room. The Distinguished Alumni Citation recognizes distinctive personal and professional achievement of ACU alumni who have merited the honor and praise of peers and colleagues. The presentation and reception are open to the entire Lipscomb community.

York, a professor of Bible and preaching at Lipscomb University, earned his bachelor’s degree, master’s degree and master of divinity from ACU, and he received his doctorate degree from Emory University in Atlanta, Ga. He is a former minister at Woodmont Hills Church of Christ in Nashville, and has served in fulltime ministry with the Westside Church in Beaverton, Ore., Western Hills in Temple, Texas and the Brentwood Hills church in Nashville.

A frequent speaker during college lecture programs and sermon seminars, York also taught for seven years at Columbia Christian College, now known as Cascade College. He lives in Brentwood, Tenn., with his wife, Anne. Their son Matt graduated from Lipscomb University in 2003. Their son Brad graduated from Abilene Christian University in 2005.

Tribute speakers at the event will include family friend, Bob Randolph; former student, Josh Graves and minister at Woodmont Hills Church of Christ, Terry Smith.

“I was really surprised and humbled at the same time when I heard I was receiving this honor. I am so blessed to be a part of this community and be able to share all that I have learned and continue to learn with others. God has done more to me and through me than I could have ever imagined,” said York.

"John is a wonderfully creative scholar and communicator. His academic training in the New Testament effectively complements his passionate pursuit of the craft of preaching and his insight into contemporary culture. John's grasp of these areas allows him to open up new vistas for our students to understand Scripture and to proclaim it in an engaging and meaningful way," said Terry Briley, dean of Lipscomb's College of Bible and Ministry.
