For Dr. Michael Cauley, teaching in Lipscomb University’s online program is about more than content delivery. It’s about access and opportunity.
Cauley joined Lipscomb as an adjunct professor in 2016 and he serves as associate professor of professional studies and lead faculty for the Performance Coaching Program. An executive-level consultant, executive coach and educator, he has helped senior leaders across multiple industries and trained coaches in health care, entertainment, government, military, higher education and Fortune 50 companies.
“This is my 10th year teaching in the program,” said Cauley, who also teaches in Lipscomb Online’s business leadership program. “The thing that I enjoy the most is the accessibility that this program gives to students. It makes education accessible to a variety of students, and the online program cuts across income, background, social levels and even age. I’ve had students as young as right out of high school and as old as 83. That’s pretty cool.”
Lipscomb’s Online programs, Cauley noted, bring together students across varied life stages and academic pathways. “At least half of the students who come through my online classes are traditional undergraduate students at Lipscomb who need a class to fit their schedule or meet a requirement,” he said. “Others are military students, or adults who have had challenging life experiences and they are following their educational goals of completing a degree. The beauty of this program is that it cuts across so many levels and still provides a high-quality education.”
Cauley’s academic background is wide-ranging, with two doctoral degrees, a Ph.D. in management from Case Western Reserve University and a Doctor of Ministry from Andrews University, along with postgraduate training in informatics at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
Beyond the classroom, Cauley is an active scholar. He has presented research internationally and in the U.S., including the Academy of Management (CTO and Health Care Divisions), the Association of Financial Professionals, the International Conference on Information Systems, the American Medical Informatics Association, the Institute of Coaching at Harvard Medical School and ARNOVA, where he was a recipient of the 2020 Emerging Scholar Award. In May, Cauley was nationally recognized as an Eisenberg Scholar awarded by a grant from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality presented by a joint committee from Hennepin Healthcare, Duke University and Vanderbilt University.
In addition, Cauley actively publishes his research in top-tier journals in healthcare and management and serves on committees for national and international organizations such as the Anesthesia Patient Safety Foundation and is the Co-chair of the Academy of Management’s Health Care Management Division, Practice Committee. His current research in clinical and translational Management Information Systems is on the well-being of health care professionals within health information technology.
Away from the academy, Cauley is an ordained minister and a United States Air Force IMA Chaplain (Captain), Air Combat Command.
