In response to the changing needs of students during the current national crisis, Lipscomb University is offering more flexibility to students by offering for the first time Lipscomb Online courses to traditional undergraduate students during the summer term, with the courses beginning on May 26.

The Lipscomb Online courses include a variety of topics not normally offered during summer term, including general education courses, Bible, business, entertainment management, psychology, leadership and more.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Lipscomb determined to halt on-site classes and on-campus residential living as of March 30. At that point, summer courses normally offered on-campus were transitioned to become remote courses, where students interact through a combination of teleconferencing at specific times and online forums and writings completed at other times.

Lipscomb Online courses provide students even more time flexibility through an asynchronous online format that allows students to move through the courses at their own pace, taking as long as 10 weeks or finishing well before that, said Emily Smith, the associate dean of academics for Lipscomb Online.

Students are able to set their own deadlines for individualized assignments and work at times that are convenient for them, Smith said.

In addition, Lipscomb Online courses are taught by highly credentialed faculty with real-world experience who bring a personalized touch to the course, where many discussions are one-on-one with the professor, said Smith.

This summer is the first time on-campus students have been offered the option to take courses in the format offered by Lipscomb Online, said Susan Galbreath, senior vice president for strategy.

In an effort to provide students as many options as possible during this challenging time, Lipscomb officials were able to overcome technological and regulation hurdles to offer these additional courses to on-campus undergraduates, she said.

Students should discuss with their faculty advisors the best courses to fit within their degree plan.

Students can see and register for the the available Lipscomb Online for summer classes here. Users should select "Summer 2020" under Term and "Web-based" under Schedule Type and look for the notes designating the Lipscomb Online offerings.
