For the sixth year in a row, Lipscomb University has been designated a Military-Friendly School by “GI Jobs,” a publication of Victory Media, for its veterans services program.

The 2015 Military-Friendly Schools list honors the top 15 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools that are doing the most to embrace America’s military service members, veterans and spouses as students and ensure their success on campus. Other institutions joining Lipscomb on the list include the Cal State Long Beach, the University of Iowa, the University of Southern California, the College of William and Mary, Pepperdine University and Elon University.

“We are proud to be recognized as an institution that serves veterans well,” said April Herrington, director of veteran services at Lipscomb. “We continually strive to improve our veterans services program, and recognition such as this is a good indicator that what we offer is working and making a difference in the quality of our students’ experiences at Lipscomb.”

Since its inception, Lipscomb’s Yellow Ribbon Program has grown from 20 original participants to more than 200 veterans enrolled this fall and growing. Students have performed well academically with 71 percent of currently enrolled student veterans maintaining a minimum 3.0 GPA.

Lipscomb University offers a variety of programs and services for veterans. Veterans who qualify for 100 percent of the Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits are able to earn, through the Yellow Ribbon Program, an undergraduate degree or a graduate business degree — a Master of Business Administration, Master of Accountancy or Master of Human Resources — tuition free.

According to the magazine, “These employers, schools, franchises and cities represent the top tier of institutions with leading opportunities for military service members and spouses.”

The Military Friendly Schools website features the list of schools, interactive tools and search functionality to help military students find the best school to suit their unique needs and preferences. The colleges, universities and trade schools on this year’s list exhibit leading practices in the recruitment and retention of students with military experience.

The common bond for schools on the list is their shared priority of recruiting students with military experience.

Now in its sixth year, the list of Military Friendly Schools was compiled through extensive research and a data-driven survey of more than 12,000 Veterans Affairs-approved schools nationwide. The survey tabulation process, methodology and weightings that comprise the list were independently verified.

Each year schools taking the survey are held to a higher standard than the previous year via improved methodology, criteria and weightings developed with the assistance of an academic advisory board consisting of educators from schools across the country.
