Lipscomb move-in day: what new students can expect

Lacey Klotz |

Lipscomb University gears up for its 2016-17 school year with move-in day, for all freshman and transfer students, Sunday, August 14, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

More than 600 new students will be moving in with the help of over 100 volunteers from churches, social clubs, athletics and upper classman.

Hillsboro Church of Christ’s 4:12 Ministry will offer a church service at 8 a.m. in the Bennett Campus Center, for new students and their families.

At 9 a.m., new students can head to the lobby of their designated resident hall to begin the registration process. Residence hall directors and residence assistants of High Rise, Elam and Fanning Halls, will be on-site to help guide students through the 10-15 minute registration process.

Sam Smith, dean of students, said new students should have their insurance information on-hand, as well as their Lipscomb ID card if they participated in the June or July Advance.

“Each student will have a folder, and we will check their insurance information, go through a check-list for their room, give them their key and FOB, and take a picture for their file,” said Smith.

Once the registration process is complete, families may begin pulling cars up to the designated unloading locations for High Rise, Elam and Fanning Halls.

Louis Nelms, director of Lipscomb’s student activities board, is spearheading move-in day, and says families can expect a lot of people and a lot of help.

“Families should definitely expect a crowd, and traffic as we are moving in a lot of people in one day,” said Nelms. “However, we will have over 100 volunteers who will be greeting people at their cars and helping them bring their belongings up to their rooms. We want parents to know they are in good hands and will have a lot of help.”

Nelms says the idea is for cars to pull up, unload and park, and suggests families label all belongs with their name and room number.

Granny White Church of Christ will provide a BBQ lunch at 11:30 a.m. for all new students and families in Bison Square.

State Farm will also be on campus offering unique student insurance packages and bank accounts; Kona Ice will be in Bison Square giving out free shaved ice; and both Lyft and Pilgrimage Music Festival will have booths on campus for new students to enjoy.

Alumni and their fall incoming Lipscomb freshman are invited to the Lipscomb Legacy Reception on Sunday, Aug. 14 on the first floor of the Bennett Campus center. The “come and go” event will be held from 4:30 to 6 p.m. and families can have their photo taken, pick up their legacy family gift and join other legacy families before the evening dinner. Although there is no charge for this event, RSVP is requested.

Lipscomb’s Student Activities Board will sponsor a McDougal’s Chicken dinner for new students at 6 p.m. in Bison Square, followed by Bingo Night at 8 p.m. in the Bennett Campus Center. Students will have a chance to win a T.V., gift cards and so much more.

Quest Week, the university’s annual freshman orientation, will begin on Tuesday, August 16, at 2 p.m. in Alumni Auditorium. The first day of classes will begin on Monday, August 22 at 8 a.m.
