Lipscomb University hosts NASW luncheon "Pioneering Efforts of African American Social Workers" Feb. 18

Lipscomb University will host the Middle Tennessee National Association of Social Workers (NASW) monthly lunch-n-learn on Feb. 18 beginning at 12 p.m. in Shamblin Theatre, 3901 Granny White Pike, Nashville.

The event will be an "African American History Month Celebration," according to the Middle Tennessee NASW website.  The cost is free and the event is open to the public.  It is a brown bag luncheon and people are asked to bring their own lunches.

The theme of February's lunch-n-learn is "Pioneering Efforts of African American Social Workers." Jenny Jones, assistant professor at the University of Tennessee's College of Social Work will give the presentation.

"We at Lipscomb are honored to be part of this celebration and to be able to host area professionals, students, and the public in recognizing contributions of African Americans in the field of social work," said Hazel Arthur, department chair and program director of social work at Lipscomb.  "Service is an important component of Lipscomb's mission as a university, and service is at the heart of all that social workers do, of all that we teach our students.

"In addition, this event and the attention it brings specifically to contributions of African American social workers fits with the university's commitment to make Lipscomb a place of greater diversity and of greater understanding of and appreciation for the diversity of life experiences of others.  To take time to acknowledge things done by people who often worked against the odds to do things in the field of social work is to acknowledge literal life-changing moments, past and present.  We, as Lipscomb faculty and students, are proud to be a part of doing just that ... for the good of the school, for the good of our community, and for the good that comes individually from the realization that we are walking in the paths trod by pioneers."

The NASW is a professional organization whose members are professional social workers. The association promotes, develops and protects the practice of social work and social workers.  NASW also seeks to enhance the well being of individuals, families, and communities through its work and advocacy, according to the naswtn.com website.
