Lipscomb hosts CHARACTER COUNTS! rally

Janel Shoun |

To celebrate CHARACTER COUNTS! week, Lipscomb hosted a rally today at David Lipscomb Elementary School.

The Lipscomb CHARACTER COUNTS! rally celebrated the importance of character during national CHARACTER COUNTS! Week this week. The rally featured former Tennessee Titans Chris Sanders and Kevin Dyson. President Randy Lowry, former Governor Winfield Dunn and board members of CHARACTER COUNTS! Nashville participated along with the Lipscomb High School football team and cheerleaders, who will led the rally. Other activities included a presentation of a CHARACTER COUNTS! song by elementary students.

“The principles that were celebrated at this rally were also principles of a committed Christian life,” said Robert King, director of the Fine Arts Program at Lipscomb. “The CHARACTER COUNTS! Nashville initiative grew from a program at Lipscomb University and a continuing partnership between Lipscomb and CHARACTER COUNTS! is a natural relationship. If our business community is to have these characteristics, then they must begin with our educational system. Simply put, the world is a better place when we adhere to these critical concepts.”

CHARACTER COUNTS! is a framework developed by the Josephson Institute of Ethics that provides a common vocabulary for adults and children as they learn and decide to do what’s right. It is based on shared beliefs and consensus values that are the “Six Pillars of Character.” These pillars are trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship. CHARACTER COUNTS! Nashville grew from an initiative by the Center for Character Development at Lipscomb University in 2001. It became its own separate non-profit organization in 2003.

Along with our national government and other state and local governments, Governor Phil Bredesen has signed a proclamation to recognize the importance of character during the 21st annual Character Counts Week, Oct. 15-21. Last year, this national initiative involved more than two million children across the nation, according to the CHARACTER COUNTS! website.
