Lipscomb to host all-state chorus preparation workshop for high school singers
Free half-day workshop helps Middle Tennessee high school singers prepare for mid-state choir auditions through collaborative rehearsals and expert instruction.

Middle Tennessee high school singers preparing for mid-state choir auditions are invited to participate in Lipscomb University’s All-State Preparation Workshop on Saturday, Sept. 19.
Hosted by the Lipscomb School of Music, the half-day workshop will give students focused instruction on the audition repertoire selected by the Middle Tennessee Vocal Association (MTVA). Through four hours of full-ensemble and sectional rehearsals, participants will work alongside other singers to strengthen their individual parts and prepare for auditions the following week.
“Learning this music collaboratively is a much more engaging experience than preparing alone,” said Christopher Nakielski, director of choral activities at Lipscomb and lead clinician for the workshop. “Even though the auditions take place individually, there is something motivating and joyful about learning the music together as one cohesive group.”
Nakielski will be joined by Susan Shirel, director of vocal activities at Lipscomb University; and Lipscomb Academy's Robert King, director of fine arts, and Elizabeth Patterson, assistant director of choral activities, along with collaborative pianists and additional clinicians.
The workshop will conclude with a performance by Lipscomb’s choral ensembles, offering participants a glimpse of the university’s robust choral program, followed by final run-throughs of the audition selections. Students are also invited to remain on campus for a free lunch and spend time with current Lipscomb students.
The event revives a workshop that Lipscomb successfully hosted in years past and reflects the School of Music’s commitment to supporting music educators and young singers throughout middle Tennessee, said Nakielski.
“This is an opportunity for Lipscomb to be a helping hand to high school students and directors,” Nakielski said. “It is one of many community outreach efforts to come, and we are excited to welcome students to campus for a day of music, collaboration and joy.”
Participation is free and registration will remain open through Wednesday, Sept. 16.
