The event is $50 per person and includes lunch, a presentation of Hicks’ newest book, The Orphan Mother, as well as a signed copy for each guest.

"It is a great honor to have Robert Hicks join us on campus to talk about his new book, The Orphan Mother, as part of our Lifelong Learning Luncheon series,” said Laura Tywater, coordinator of Lifelong Learning programs. “We are excited for community members to join us in welcoming Robert Hicks to campus and hear this local author share his influences, research and ideas that have come to life in his new and compelling novel.”

The Orphan Mother is the unforgettable story of one woman’s heroic struggle in the face of overwhelming adversity and the undeniable strength of a mother’s love.

In the years following the Civil War, Mariah Reddick, former slave to Carrie McGavock – the “Widow of the South” – has quietly built a new life for herself as a midwife to the women of Franklin, Tennessee. But when her ambitious, politically minded grown son, Theopolis, is murdered, Mariah – no stranger to loss – finds her world breaking apart. In her journey to uncover the truth, she must also confront the truths of her own past.

A native of South Florida, Hicks moved to Williamson County, Tennessee in 1974. Hicks has written two other bestsellers including, The Widow of the South and A Separate Country.

Recognized as a “master storyteller” by the San Francisco Chronicle, as well as “Nashville’s Master of Ceremonies” by Nashville Lifestyles magazine, Hicks is also a speaker, leader, world-traveler and preservationist.

RSVP for this event is required. To RSVP, contact Laura Tywater at 615-966-5733.
