Lipscomb appoints five new members to Board of Trustees

Five new board members from throughout the Southeast were appointed to the Lipscomb University Board of Trustees at its last meeting in February.

James Addison Barry, Jr., 58, is a patent attorney who owns his own law office and is currently an elder at College Hills church of Christ in Lebanon, Tenn. Barry holds a master’s of business administration from Trinity University-San Antonio, Texas, and his juris doctor from Pepperdine University in Malibu, Calif.

He is a retired captain for American Airlines and a retired lieutenant colonel in the United States Air Force Reserves. He lives in Lebanon with his wife Judee. 

Barry said he wants “to help Lipscomb in its pursuits to offer outstanding Christian education, to witness to the world about Christ and to reconcile men and women to God and one another.”

Barry’s Lipscomb connections go back almost to its beginning. His grandfather O.P. Barry attended Lipscomb in the 1890s, when it was called Nashville Bible College, and he served on the Board of Trustees from approximately 1918 to 1923.

Robert A. Brackett II, 43, of Vero Beach, Fla., is the owner of Edge Information Services in Melbourne and before that theowner of Credit Data Services in Florida.

Brackett, a native to Vero Beach, holds a bachelor’s degree from Lipscomb University in marketing. He attends Vero Beach Church of Christ, and is on the boards of directors for Indian River Charter High School and Vero Beach American Little League. He was the past president of the Treasure Coast Officials Association and a member of the Florida High School Athletic Association. 

Brackett was excited to be appointed to the board because, “I believe Lipscomb has the potential to be recognized as one of America’s outstanding universities.” 

Peter T. Gunn, III, 64, of Benton, Ky., is president of insurance agency Morgan, Trevathan & Gunn Inc. In the community, he has served as chairman for Marshall County Hospitals and currently serves on the board for Benton Electric System.

Gunn, a Benton, Ky. native, holds a bachelor’s degree from Lipscomb University. Gunn and his wife Judy attend Central Church of Christ, and both their children graduated from Lipscomb.

Gunn said his goals for the university are to build a strong student recruitment program and upgrade buildings on the Nashville campus.

Robert E. Wood, 49, of Brentwood, Tenn., is the managing director of Boult Cummings Conners & Berry PLC. He is an associate member of the American Land Title Association (ALTA), a member of the Tennessee Land Title Association and a fellow in the American College of Mortgage Attorneys. 

In the community, he serves as president of the Lipscomb University Business Leadership Council and on the Board of Directors for Rocketown Inc. 

Wood, a Nashville native, holds a bachelor’s degree from Lipscomb University and a juris doctor from Emory University School of Law. He and his wife Karen are members of Harpeth Hills Church of Christ, where he serves as an elder. 

Wood said his goals as a trustee are to make sure Lipscomb continues to serve the community and pursues objectives to make it a first class academic institution. 

Mark H. Yokley, 47, of Huntsville, Ala., is president of G.W. Jones & Sons Consulting. He serves as the president of the Huntsville Rotary Club and on the Huntsville Hospital Foundation Board of Directors. 

Yokley, a native of Edmonton, Ky., holds a bachelor’s degree from Lipscomb University and a bachelor’s in civil engineering from Auburn University. He lives in Huntsville with his wife Lisa and two daughters, one of whom is a freshman in the nursing program at Lipscomb. Yokley attends Mayfair Church of Christ in Huntsville. 

Yokley said his goal is to preserve Christian higher education for the future, because college is the time young people most need to have Christians in their lives.
