Lipscomb accounting graduates pass rate on CPA examination among top in nation

 |

Lipscomb University business graduates have once again outperformed students from across the nation on the Uniform Certified Public Accountant (CPA) Examination. Candidate Performance results from the 2004 CPA Exam were recently released, which indicated a high performance by Lipscomb candidates.

During the 2004 examination period, 33 Lipscomb University candidates sat for the CPA Exam. Their performance on the exam ranked among the best in the nation and in Tennessee. The results:

• Lipscomb University ranked fifth nationwide for the percentage of candidates without an advanced degree passing two sections of the exam. Lipscomb was ranked fifth in this category behind Emory University, Tulane University, Bucknell University and Boston University.

• Lipscomb University tied with Butler University and Creighton University for eighth place nationwide for the percentage of first-time candidates without advanced degrees passing two sections of the exam.

• Among Tennessee schools, Lipscomb University ranked third behind Vanderbilt University and The University of Tennessee for the average pass rates for each of the four parts of the 2004 CPA Examination.

“We are very pleased with these results. It indicates that our graduates are very well prepared to enter the accounting profession. Lipscomb University has had an excellent reputation for many years in this field and it is continuing,” said Greg Carnes, dean of Lipscomb University’s College of Business.

Ben Bargagliotti, a May 2005 graduate, passed all four sections of the CPA Exam in his first sitting. He said the education he received at Lipscomb prepared him to succeed on the exam.

“The Lipscomb accounting program is a great program. Lipscomb has a great core faculty who not only know
their subject matter, but also care about their students. This faculty is so well connected in the Nashville business community, and they are often willing to pick up the phone and put in a good word for their students. That kind of personal recommendation is often worth more than an Ivy League degree,” said Bargagliotti, who is a second year staff auditor for Deloitte & Touche in Nashville.

According to the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy website, the Uniform CPA Exam is designed to assess the knowledge and skills entry-level CPAs need to practice public accountancy. The successful completion of the Uniform CPA Examination is a requirement for licensure in all 55 jurisdictions. The Uniform CPA Examination is offered during four testing windows during each year. The exam covers four subject areas: Auditing & Attestation, Financial Accounting & Reporting, Regulation, and Business Environment & Concepts. Candidates determine which part(s) of the exam to take during a testing window. Thus, some candidates may sit for as few as one part and others for as many as four parts of the exam.
