Lifelong Learning Program launches third year Sept. 8

Dr. Dennis Loyd, retired professor of English, was interviewed by May Dean Eberling of NewsChannel 5+ regarding the Lifelong Learning Program's fall schedule of classes for the "Plus Side of Nashville" program. The program will appear on NewsChannel 5+ Friday, Aug. 29 at 8:30 p.m.; Saturday, Aug. 30 at 6 a.m., noon and 7 p.m.; and Sunday at 6 a.m., noon and 6 p.m. NewsChannel 5+ is located on Comcast channel 50 in Nashville.

Friday's "Talk of the Town", which airs on Channel 5 in Nashville at 12:30 p.m., will feature an interview with Debra Connelly regarding her Lifelong Learning course, "Musicals, Operas, Masterpieces, and More ... What's It All About?" Debra is a past member of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Chorus directed by Robert Shaw and now is a private voice and piano instructor in Nashville.

Lipscomb University will present special courses for seniors on subjects ranging from Greek culture to Nashville culture and opera to archaeology in its Lifelong Learning Program, to begin Sept. 8.

            The courses are designed specifically for those of retirement or semi-retirement age. Each course meets one afternoon per week for five weeks.

"The program at Lipscomb is an opportunity for seniors of all stages of life and abilities to engage in the on-going work of learning," said Patty Dugger, program director.

            Courses to be offered during Fall Session I, which will be held from Sept. 8-Oct. 10, and their instructors: Who Was Edgar Allan Poe? Dr. Dennis Loyd, retired professor of English; Meet the Greeks, Dr. David Lawrence, professor of history; Archaeology and the New Testament, Dr. Rodney Cloud, retired professor of Bible and Hebrew; Musicals, Operas, Masterpieces, and More ... What's It All About? Debra Connelly, past member of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Chorus directed by Robert Shaw, performs regularly; Computer I, Al Austelle, associate professor of computer science and director of the Lipscomb Center for Instructional Technology; and Computer III, Becky Tallon, assistant professor of physics and engineering science.

Fall Session II classes, to be held Oct. 20-Nov. 21, include A Tale of Two Parthenons: Athens and Nashville, Wesley Paine, curator, the Parthenon and co-author of Classical Nashville; Islam: Founding, Beliefs and Culture, Ernest Clevenger, professor of Bible, former academic dean and president of Faulkner University; Prophecy and Fulfillment in the Bible, Dr. Terry Briley, dean, College of Bible and Ministry; Come, Tour Nashville Sites, Marilyn Switzer, a tour guide for Mary Williams Guide Service who also runs a walking tour business, "I'll Take Tennessee;"  Computer II, Al Austelle.

The cost is $50 per person for each class. Individuals may take two classes during the same session for $75. For two people living at the same address enrolled for classes, the cost is $75 for the two. Some classes may require the purchase of a textbook. All suggested and required textbooks may be purchased in the university bookstore or at registration.
