Landiss Lecture Series kicks off with presentation on Edith Simcox

 |

Dr. Constance Fulmer returns to Lipscomb University on Sept. 29 to kick off this year's Landiss Lecture Series with a presentation on the life and work of Victorian scholar and reformer, Edith Simcox. The presentation is at 7:30 p.m. in Swang 108, 3901 Granny White Pike, Nashville, Tenn. This event is free and open to the public.

Simcox's influence ranges from written works to personal attempts to reform society. She wrote extensive articles, books, and an autobiography; supported and participated in numerous movements and reform efforts; created arenas in which women could work; and established trade unions for a variety of workers, according to the website http://faculty.pepperdine.edu/cfulmer/simcox/. Simcox was a proponent for women's suffrage and an associate of the leading political, intellectual and literary figures of her time, as well as a friend of George Eliot.

Fulmer, who serves as the Blanche E. Seaver Chair of English Literature and Humanities at Pepperdine University, taught in Lipscomb's Department of English under the chairmanship of Dr. Morris Landiss from 1960 to 1980. She received her undergraduate degree in psychology from Lipscomb, master of arts in education from Harding University, master of arts in mathematics from the University of Alabama and master of arts and doctorate in English from Vanderbilt University.

Fulmer published A Monument to the Memory of George Eliot: Edith J. Simcox's Autobiography of a Shirtmaker, and George Eliot: A Reference Guide. She has also written for numerous journals and scholarly periodicals and has made formal presentations in the U.S. and abroad.

The Landiss Lecture Series was established in 1984 by Dr. Morris Landiss to create opportunities to stimulate intellectual growth for Lipscomb students, faculty, staff and administration as well as for the community surrounding Lipscomb.  Since that time, many exceptional literary figures have spoken at Lipscomb's Landiss Lectures, including George Garrett, Jay Parini, Bret Lott, Robert Massie, Richard Marius, Patricia McKissack, and John Egerton.

The Landiss Lecture Series is sponsored by Lipscomb's Department of English. For more information, call 615.279.5960.
