Internationally recognized Lucille Tenazas headlines Award for Logo Design

Lucille Tenazas, founder of Tenazas Design, a New York-based communication graphics and design firm that works primarily for cultural, educational and non-profit organizations, will kick off the 2008-09 Presidential Lectures in Art and Art History as well as headline the awards ceremony for Nashville’s only Award for Excellence in Logo Design.

Lipscomb University’s Department of Art and Advent, the experiential marketing firm, will present the third annual Award for Excellence in Logo Design at the Nov. 10 kick-off of the Presidential Lectures this year in the Ezell Center.

The awards reception will be held Monday, Nov. 10, at 6 p.m., and the lecture by Tenazas will be held at 7 p.m., both in the Ezell Center. The reception will afford attendees the chance to see all the entries and to vote on the people’s choice award winner before hearing the lecture.

Tenazas will speak on the topic, “The Designer as Cultural Nomad,” proposing that the role of design is not merely to sell and convince, but to enlighten, pose questions and offer a way to interact with and understand the world.

In 2008 Tenazas was appointed the first Henry Wolf professor at Parsons The New School for Design in New York to establish a master’s of fine arts program in communication design. Previously, she was a faculty member at the California College of the Arts. 

From 1996-98, Tenazas served as national president of the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA). In 2002 she was awarded the prestigious National Design Award for Communication Design by the Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum, and in 1995 she was honored in as one of the ID Forty -- ID Magazine’s selection of America’s leading design innovators.

The best and the brightest in the Nashville design field and design education attended the Award for Excellence in Logo Design awards ceremony held in November 2007. More then 120 logo designs were entered last year.

Previous winners have come from Nashville’s top design firms such as Thomas Nelson Publishing and Primarily Rye as well as independent free-lancers.

This year, Nashville and regional graphic designers are encouraged to submit original logo designs by Nov. 5 at entries@nashvillelogodesign.com.

Creative logos will be judged in the following categories: creative use of typography; best icon design; people’s choice; and overall design winner.

The overall design winner will win an Apple iPhone and all other winners will receive the newly designed iPods. This event is endorsed by the Nashville Scene, Midtown Printing, Level 2D, Data Supplies Incorporated and AIGA Nashville.
